Casting the Annual Chart

Part 1
1. Solar Return/ Varsha-Pravesh: The longitude of the Sun at birth forms the basis of the annual chart. The annual chart for any given year of one’s life is the horoscope cast for the exact moment when the Sun attains, during that year, the same longitude as it had at the time of birth. According to Surya Siddhanta, as modified, a solar year has a duration of 365 days 15 Ghatis 22 Palas, and 57.5 Vipals; corresponding to 365 days six hours 9 minutes and 9.72 seconds. It means that the Sun completes one round of the 12 signs of zodiac during this time. After completing one round, the Sun returns to its original position time and again. Thus if we add 365 days 6 hours 9.72 minutes to the weekday and time of birth, we get the weekday and time next year when the Sun would regain the same longitude as it had at birth. This would go on repeating every year. This is called the solar return or Varsha-Pravesh.

2. Dhruvanka: If we ignore the complete weeks out a year (365 days, 6 hours, 9 minutes & 9.72 seconds), we get 1 day, 6 hour, 9 minute & 9.72 seconds. This period is constant for a year. Double the constant would give us the constant for two years and so on. This constant is called Dhruvanka. Adding this Dhruvanka for any number of completed years to the weekday and time of birth would give us the weekday and time of Varsha-Pravesh for the year to commence. (The weekday thus obtained generally falls on the native’s actual birthday or at the most it may fall on a weekday before or after the actual birthday.

3. Process of Casting an Annual Chart
The first requirement of casting an annual Chart is to obtain the birth Chart of the native or to calculate the birth chart itself. Next comes the determination of Varsh-Pravesh and then the annual chart is prepared for the Varsh-Pravesh so obtained. Thus following steps are required in casting an annual chart:

1. Note the weekday of the birth of the  native along with his date, time and place of birth.

2. Calculate the longitudes of lagna, 10th house and all the planets and prepare the birth horoscope if not already prepared and calculate Vimshotri dasha during the period.

3. Decide the particular calendar year for which the annual is to be prepared.

4. For the calendar year in question, find the native’s completed years of life by deducting the year of birth from the current year. For example, if the annual chart for 1946-47 is to be prepared for a native born in 1889, by deducting 1889 from 1946, we get 57 years of completed years of life and annual chart for 58 year is to be prepared.

5. Find out the Dhruvanka for the number of completed years from the above table. For example for 57 years of completed life, the Dhruvanka will be Dhruvanka for 55 years plus Dhruvanka for two years i.e. 6 days, 2 hours, 23 minutes and 55 seconds + 2 days, 12 hours, 18 minutes and 19 sec = 8 or 1 day, 14 hours, 42 minutes and 14 seconds. (from number of days, multiples of 7 should be ignored).
