Encyclopedia of Vedic Astrology: Planetary Transit: Factors Modifying Transits, Chapter V, Part - 1

Dr. Shanker Adawal

5.1 Introduction

5.1.1 The study of transits is one of the most fundamental techniques in astrology. The transits are real time physical astrological influences arising from the relations between the present placements by zodiacal signs and degree of planets at the time under consideration and their placement in the birth chart for the native or entity being studied. They indicate important trends and issues in one’s life. A native is most likely to experience emotionally, psychologically and circumstantially under each transit. However transit by a single planet is never operative at any given time. Simultaneous transits of several planets- both inner and outer planets, occur constantly which reinforce or nullify or modify the transit results for good or bad. In the previous chapters we have seen that transiting planets with reference to natal Moon/ ascendant gives benefic results in certain specific places in their chart. But there are a number of ways in which the transit effects are reinforced, reduced or fail to materialize. We shall discuss these details in this chapter.

5.1.2 There are many sensitive points in a horoscope, transits of planets over which cause important events depending on various factors like the nature & potency of transits, dasha/ antar-dasha prevailing at the time and the strength of planets concerned. One such point is mid-cusps of the houses or the degree of ascendant at birth and in that very degree, after expunging the sign in subsequent houses. Similarly Nakshtra pada gives the sensitive points of the Moon for a particular birth time. Then there are degrees of planets in the houses wherein they are posited in a birth chart. The transits of planets over these degrees and exactly 180 de3grees away from them are important. The diurnal degrees (obtained by deducting longitudes of planets from that of the ascendant) help considerably to pinpoint the events, good or bad. The location of a planet in transit in one’s own. Mooltrikone, exaltation, friend’s house or its reverse, the strength & weakness of the house, the disposition of planet in the Ashtakvarga, and the factor of an aspect on the transiting planet, play an important role in enhancing or reducing the transiting effects.

5.2 In-built modifications to the Transit

5.2.1 Shri Mantreshwar in his Phaldeepika, has stated that The Sun and Mars give effective results in their transit over first one third of a sign or through initial 10 degrees of a sign and after that the intensity goes down. Jupiter and Venus are effective in their transit between 10 to 20 degrees of a sign. The Moon & Saturn give their effective results during last 10 degrees of a sign. However the Mercury and the nodes are effective throughout the 30 degree transit through a house without any loss of their effectiveness.

5.2.2 There is another capsule regarding the transit considered from the natal position of the planets. The planets give poor results, when any transit the following positions from their natal positions:

i) Saturn: 1st House
ii) Ketu: 2nd House
iii) Jupiter: 3rd House
iv) Mercury: 4th House
v) Sun: 5th House
vi) Venus: 6th House
vii) Mars: 7th House
viii) Moon: 8th House
ix) Rahu: 9th House
