Encyclopedia of Vedic Astrology: Planetary Transit: Transit of Jupiter, Chapter VIII, Part - 1

Dr. Shanker Adawal

8.1 Introduction

8.1.1 The Jupiter is termed “the great fortune/ benefic” is also called Guru or Brihaspati in Vedic astrology or Ammon in Egypt. It is the largest body in our solar system and orbits around it once every 11.86 years or it remains in a sign/ house for approximately a year. Its magnetic field is 20, 000 times stronger than that of Earth and it sends out strong radio waves. Jupiter represents truth, wisdom, knowledge, providential help, law, and wealth (values) that enables a man to lead a righteous life and to realize God. In female nativity, it represents chastity and husband. It is a planet of growth, harmony, expansion, dilatation, enlargement, budding & blooming and consciousness. Jupiter uplifts the soul and encourages the native to lead a spiritual and virtuous life. In a horoscope, he is the karaka of 2nd, 5th, 9th, 10th and 11th houses. He rules over feet, liver, tumours, fat and circulation of blood in the body. It also represents NE direction, Sharad Ritu (winter) and yellow colour. Jupiter signifies preceptor, royal favours, finances, banks & companies, being a minister or government authority, judge/ lawyer, long/ air journeys, beautiful/ palatial mansions, friends, elder brother, family, children and occult sciences.

8.1.2 Jupiter provides good results if in a natal horoscope it is placed in houses 1, 2, 5, 8, 9 and 12th, but 6th, 7th, and the 10th are bad houses for him. It gives bad results if Mercury or Venus is placed in 10th house of a horoscope. Jupiter never gives bad results if placed alone in a house and malefic results if placed with Saturn or node in a horoscope. During transit, Jupiter gives auspicious results while transiting in 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th & 11th from natal Moon, provided there is no planet in 12th, 4th, 3rd, 10th and 8th houses respectively from the natal Moon: These results also get modified by transit in various Nakshtra and due to Moorti Nirnaya as described in chapter-5. The effects of transiting Jupiter over a planet or point in a house last for more than a month and provide opportunities in the area of life involved by the aspected planet. The difficult aspects may lead to serious misjudgment, overconfidence, extravagant behavior or sheer bad luck. The house where Jupiter transits, prospers for its better qualities and bring success. Planets transited by Jupiter are energized and securely established. It fulfills the desires of the native. However, Jupiter’s transit receives more positive publicity than it deserves. If we wait for Jupiter to bestow us with wonderful gifts every time, we are sure to be disappointed. What Jupiter does is to infuse us with the license to dream, to hope, to have faith and to feel good about ourselves. Jupiter acts to expand and it gives us hope & enthusiasm. It is the planet of possibilities and it offers us promises. Whether these promises are realistic is something different.

8.1.3 Jupiter is an influence that acts to expand and enlarge our personal landscape. Its transit allows growth and expansion of consciousness involving the conditions & natures of the houses & planets involved. It indicates the impact which money, wealth, expanded social contacts, the values we attach to our faith, or the desire to meet & work with people have on various fields of life / experience. Our confidence & level of joy is increased in these areas of life and we feel more confident & motivated to improve or gain in life. Problems arise when we overdo and ignore and realities/ restraints. Jupiter’s undesirable characteristics are often the over-something. Over-eating, over-drinking, over-spending, and over-optimism are some of the ways it can cause difficulty. Arrogance, neglect of details and a tendency towards irresponsibility can also cause problems. We must be aware of overdoing or glossing over details to feed our optimism. However Jupiter is a jovial influence and we all need that kind of energy from time to time. When Jupiter transits a natal planet/ house, it gives that part of our personality a boost, reminding us of our capabilities and to have faith in ourselves. However, Jupiter is inimical to Mercury & Venus and does not give good results to natives born in lagnas ruled by these planets, the worst case being of Taurus lagna natives.

7.3 Transit over natal Planets & Points

Part 2

7.3.7 Over Saturn: This indicates numerous obstructions & delays in any work one wants to accomplish. So one should rely only on oneself & one’s resources and concentrate on work with strong determination. Disciplined energy, careful precise work, repressed anger & ambition and avoidance of any conflict may be key to success. There may be losses through siblings or subordinates, new enemies may crop up, frustration & irritation is afflicted, there may be death in family, loss of wealth through theft, robbery, bad debts or fraud, disturbed peace of mind, disgrace/ dishonor, accident prone transit and troubles through bilious & windy complaints. One should not stand surety for anybody.

7.3.8 Over Nodes: The transit over Rahu indicates strong interest in athletic or physical activities. At times there may be over-stimulated or exaggerated sexual arousal. One may get strong help from siblings to improve life style. Whereas transit over Ketu, denotes desire for power & authority but lack of popular support. Native may have problems in business, political activities and be unpopular in profession. One may be conservative in outlook.

7.3.9 Over Ascendant: It denotes great activity/ energy, impulse to form attachments with females and desire for birth of son. However if malefic, it is adverse for health, causing confusion/ conflicts, feverish/ inflammatory complaints, hurt/ injury due to accident and disfavor from others. It gives worst results while transiting over Taurus/ Libra lagna.

7.3.10 Over 10th Cusp: Mars gets directional strength here and 10th is an Upachaya house. Therefore it indicates success in all endeavours of mechanical nature, undertaken with boldness & courage and without involving in emotions & disputes. If malefic it may cause heavy losses in business or death/ grievous injury to father.

7.4 Example Chart No. 5: Mr. Vinay Kumar
Charts 1
The native his exalted Mercury as 10th lord in 10th house. Sun, Mars & Venus are well placed in own houses – 9th, 5th and 11th respectively. This made him a professional electronic engineer. He joined service in 1996 during Ven-Ven. In May 2000, during Venus, Mars, while Venus was transiting 2nd house and the Mars, the 3rd house from natal Moon (both favourable transit) the native got a hidden & steep rise in profession and Mars being 5th lord blessed him a son as well.

7.5 Conclusion
7.5.1 The Mars is a malefic & Tamsik planet of high order. But Mars gives energy. It is a planet of focused energy and outgoing impulse, but also rules over the animal instinct of man. If the energies of Mars are allowed to operate to excess, then only its effects could be difficult or malefic. It being a fiery planet, may cause rashness, hot temper, violent actions, accidents, wounds, operations etc. Natives with weak energy are not much of a personality, so it is necessary to have strong Mars in natal chart. Natives with strong Mars dominate others. Its transit gives energy & vigour. In human body Mars governs external sex organs, head, muscular system, bone marrow, prostrate, rectum etc. Mars is concerned with reproductive, restrictive and destructive process.

7.5.2 The transit Mars over a planet or a point, energizes it. During transit of Mars, the planets are ignited through the energy of Mars. A strong Mars denotes a great longing for manifestation & creation; while a weak one leads to perversion, despotism and egoism. Although the effect of transit of Mars is not long, but, being hot, expansive, rapid, egoistic and impulsive, it is so sudden and precipitate the matters so quickly, that it rarely gives any opportunity to one to any choice of action. The rapid expansion produces impulsive and unpremeditated action and seems to act as an explodent- mild or violent, according to the temperament depending on the thought force generated in the past. Hence the effects of transit of Mars depend to a great extent on the native’s past thoughts and state of ego. However, generally transit of Mars, gives good results in 3rd, 6th & 11th houses from natal Moon, while the Moon is waxing provided there are no Vedhas.

7.3 Transit over natal Planets & Points

Part 1

The transits of Mars over planets and points in the natal chart are relatively brief in influences, lasting approximately 2-4 days. Mars acts to energize and activate the conditions surrounding the planets and points it touches. The impact is normally so sudden and tends to precipitate matters, so quickly that it hardly gives the native any time to think and react.

7.3.1 Over Sun: If Mars be well dignified and not near enough to be combust, it may infuse greater energy, stamina & activities into matters signified by Sun, and the house in which it is placed. The native may impulsively do something competitive, which he normally does not have the courage/ chance to do. However it is normally accompanied by risk of ill health, accidents, injuries, rashness, disputes, conflicts or extravagance. If Mars is ill dignified, one is rash, treacherous, bloody minded, house breaker or murderer and generally end his days in a violent manner/ death. If Mars & Sun transit 6th house simultaneously, native may have typhoid, high fever, eye trouble or fall from a high place.

7.3.2 Over Moon: It makes one disobedient to his mother, liar and of wicked deeds. If both the planets are well dignified, one marries someone much above his own status, fond of women, but seldom suffers by them. He may be bold, courageous & enterprising, good warrior, surgeon or chemist, or may succeed in business of weapons, plough, earthen jars or agricultural instruments. It causes excessive blood loss during periods of menses, accidents & injuries. If Moon is ill dignified, one becomes vulgar, base & mean, poor, drunkard and dissipated. If Mars be ill dignified, one may be violent, furious, treacherous, cruel, murderer, or traitor, who seldom lives long.

7.3.3 Over natal Mars: This is a period of about one and a half to two months, making one impulsive, restless, with increased physical energy, aggression and personal ambitions. It strengthens all the characteristics of the planet according to its position and aspects at birth. Sports may be beneficial. Beginning of new projects may have to be tackled with opposition. Unless one channel one’s abundant energy & intuition into decisive action or vigorous work, anger, conflicts and irritation may result. Accidents may occur due to rashness. There may be losses due to speculation and loss of property.

7.3.4 Over Mercury: It makes one fickle minded, easily satisfied and fond of eating at others’ place. If conjunction is in a Kendra, one may get married, be happy, and earn more money. He may be skilled in boxing, dealer in herbs, plants, oils & drugs. One may gain in business of medicine and chemicals. This is not a good time to schedule any activity that calls for tact, diplomacy or caution, as the native is extremely straight forward and direct. If afflicted, there may be loss due fire, worries & troubles, scandals, association of wicked women and uncordial relations with parents. If both are strong & free from affliction, one will be learned, of sound judgment and of penetrating mind. If Mars is ill dignified, one may be treacherous, blood thirsty, drunkard or a gambler and a compelling urge to be with one’s love partner. There is a basic drive to appreciate and taste life. It enhances chances of marriage, increase in sexual desires and emotional bliss. It is a good time to enjoy creative & social enjoyments and pleasure giving works. If Mars be well dignified, one may be of hasty temper but of good & forgiving nature, fortunate, admired, addicted to women, but maintains his respect. If the conjunction is afflicted, one may be proud, quarrelsome, lustful, debauched, wicked, association with other ladies may end in scandals or there may be separation between husband & wife.

7.3.6 Over Jupiter: It is an excellent transit to be assertive and move forward in career or business ventures. One has the ideal drive & courage to make one’s vision a reality. The native may be well behaved, victorious over enemies, bold, leader of the town, wealthy, intelligent and prudent in occult sciences. One’s efforts will be equally gainful & rewarding and all financial plans may succeed. Money may come from many sources including speculation. There may be providential help in critical times. This is a period of good health, self-confidence, easy birth of a son, long travels, harmonious legal dealings and religious zeal & pride. But if Jupiter is afflicted at birth, there may be extravagance, loss or squandering of resources, and trouble through law or religion.
