8.1 Introduction

8.1.1 The Jupiter is termed “the great fortune/ benefic” is also called Guru or Brihaspati in Vedic astrology or Ammon in Egypt. It is the largest body in our solar system and orbits around it once every 11.86 years or it remains in a sign/ house for approximately a year. Its magnetic field is 20, 000 times stronger than that of Earth and it sends out strong radio waves. Jupiter represents truth, wisdom, knowledge, providential help, law, and wealth (values) that enables a man to lead a righteous life and to realize God. In female nativity, it represents chastity and husband. It is a planet of growth, harmony, expansion, dilatation, enlargement, budding & blooming and consciousness. Jupiter uplifts the soul and encourages the native to lead a spiritual and virtuous life. In a horoscope, he is the karaka of 2nd, 5th, 9th, 10th and 11th houses. He rules over feet, liver, tumours, fat and circulation of blood in the body. It also represents NE direction, Sharad Ritu (winter) and yellow colour. Jupiter signifies preceptor, royal favours, finances, banks & companies, being a minister or government authority, judge/ lawyer, long/ air journeys, beautiful/ palatial mansions, friends, elder brother, family, children and occult sciences.

8.1.2 Jupiter provides good results if in a natal horoscope it is placed in houses 1, 2, 5, 8, 9 and 12th, but 6th, 7th, and the 10th are bad houses for him. It gives bad results if Mercury or Venus is placed in 10th house of a horoscope. Jupiter never gives bad results if placed alone in a house and malefic results if placed with Saturn or node in a horoscope. During transit, Jupiter gives auspicious results while transiting in 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th & 11th from natal Moon, provided there is no planet in 12th, 4th, 3rd, 10th and 8th houses respectively from the natal Moon: These results also get modified by transit in various Nakshtra and due to Moorti Nirnaya as described in chapter-5. The effects of transiting Jupiter over a planet or point in a house last for more than a month and provide opportunities in the area of life involved by the aspected planet. The difficult aspects may lead to serious misjudgment, overconfidence, extravagant behavior or sheer bad luck. The house where Jupiter transits, prospers for its better qualities and bring success. Planets transited by Jupiter are energized and securely established. It fulfills the desires of the native. However, Jupiter’s transit receives more positive publicity than it deserves. If we wait for Jupiter to bestow us with wonderful gifts every time, we are sure to be disappointed. What Jupiter does is to infuse us with the license to dream, to hope, to have faith and to feel good about ourselves. Jupiter acts to expand and it gives us hope & enthusiasm. It is the planet of possibilities and it offers us promises. Whether these promises are realistic is something different.

8.1.3 Jupiter is an influence that acts to expand and enlarge our personal landscape. Its transit allows growth and expansion of consciousness involving the conditions & natures of the houses & planets involved. It indicates the impact which money, wealth, expanded social contacts, the values we attach to our faith, or the desire to meet & work with people have on various fields of life / experience. Our confidence & level of joy is increased in these areas of life and we feel more confident & motivated to improve or gain in life. Problems arise when we overdo and ignore and realities/ restraints. Jupiter’s undesirable characteristics are often the over-something. Over-eating, over-drinking, over-spending, and over-optimism are some of the ways it can cause difficulty. Arrogance, neglect of details and a tendency towards irresponsibility can also cause problems. We must be aware of overdoing or glossing over details to feed our optimism. However Jupiter is a jovial influence and we all need that kind of energy from time to time. When Jupiter transits a natal planet/ house, it gives that part of our personality a boost, reminding us of our capabilities and to have faith in ourselves. However, Jupiter is inimical to Mercury & Venus and does not give good results to natives born in lagnas ruled by these planets, the worst case being of Taurus lagna natives.
