Sun: The First phalanx longest shows that Artistic mental qualities are strongest, and indicates the Artist, Writer or Poet.

2^nd Phalanx longest, the business side will be uppermost.

3^rd Phalanx longest, not destined for art; there will be a love of display, the taste will be common, with a marked liking for showy colours. With the First and Second phalanges equal, the artistic talents will be used to make money. The Second phalanx short may secure reputation, but no money. The Second and Third phalanges equal in length, and long, the desire to make money will be strong, but no artistic qualities will be present.

Conic Tip will make the subject more artistic, and with a long first phalanx, the qualities will be enhanced; with the Second phalanx longest, the artistic qualities will be applied to business.

Square Tip makes the subject more practical and regular in his habits. It gives commonsense, and practical ideas are added to good business qualities. With the Third phalanx longest, there will be a strong desire for riches, and when obtained a great show of wealth would be made in a vulgar ostentatiousness.

Spatulate Tip adds activity and originality, and also dramatic ability, marking a natural entertainer. All the qualities of pleasure-giving are marked by originality and activity, often producing a clever after-dinner speaker and mimic. With the Third phalanx longest, there will be not only a fondness for games, but much skill and dash in them. Knotty fingers are really a defect here, as they make the operations slow and less effective. Smooth fingers are best.

Mercury: The First phalanx longest indicates the possession of great power of expression, even eloquence and oratory, public speakers or writers. The Second phalanx longest make a good Doctor, Lawyer or Scientist.

The Third phalanx longest the commercial side will be the most prominent; they are excellent merchants or businessmen in any capacity. The First longest, with Pointed tip, the subject will be able to draw on his imagination, and will indulge in flights of fancy in oratory. With Conic tip, will be artistic and eloquent, and will indulge in word painting and mental pictures. With Square tip, they will talk on practical subjects, show commonsense and reason, while facts and figures will be employed freely. With Spatulate tip, the subject will be a magnetic speaker, whose fiery speeches will move masses with its vigour or originality and strength.

The Second longest, with Pointed tip, idealism will permeate scientific researches. Square tip, commonsense practical ideas rule.

Spatulate tip, active in search for fresh discoveries in old scenes; will not be satisfied to follow beaten tracks.

Third longest, with Pointed or Conic Tip, the idealism and love of the artistic will be linked to business ability. Square tip, commonsense and practical ideas will operate and show a business man who makes every penny tell in his accounts, and brooks no foolishness in business matters. Spatulate tip, great activity, energy and originality; will push business and devise new way of making money. This is a strong combination. In using these points on Individual Fingers, both hands must be compared, as in a very large number of hands the length and shape of the tips will vary. Thus in one hand the finger of Jupiter may be long and pointed, while in the other it may be shorter, with a Conic or Square tip thus indicating a very marked change in the individual-the long pointed Jupiter indicating a love of responsibility and with strong religious tendencies, whilst the shorter finger of Jupiter would tell of less liking for responsibility and a lessening of the religious tendencies, and in consequence a more practical condition of the mind.

General Instructions

Part 1

First thing to be noted in Palmistry that two hands are never alike. The mere pointing out of one or two variations has sent them adrift on the ocean of speculation.

To enable the readers to use the information contained in this book in such a way as to deepen their own interest in the Science, while interesting others, the following points on the individual fingers may be welcome-but due regard must be paid to the whole hand, as laid down in the earlier chapters.

Jupiter:- If long this finger shows pride and contemplation if very long, however, it indicates a sense of luxury, love of pleasure and comfort combined with arrogance and egoism.

If short, it indicates activity and impulse, and a tendency to avoid responsibility. If very short a dislike for responsibility and incapability of undertaking it.

Long and pointed, it betrays religious instincts and inclinations, together with pride and strong ambition. With the second phalanx long, the ambition will be strong, while the third phalanx long betrays pride and a love of rule. Long and Square there will be a love of and search for truth from natural sources of information, and a desire to get to the bottom of things. If Spatulate, there will be much of originality, with intense mysticism; while if the fingers are smooth, error is indicated.

Conic Tip:- This will add idealistic and intuitive qualities.

Square Tip:- This gives commonsense views; such a subject will reason and take less for granted; will love landscape painting.

Spatulate Tip:- This will give agnosticism, originality; such a person will follow no temple or creed, and will manifest a domineering spirit, such as marks the tyrant and despot. The broader the tip, the more dominating the trend, and the less religions.

2^nd Phalanx:- Tells of ambition and practical matters.

If Tip is Conic, add Conic qualities.

If Square, it will afford the best indication for business.

If Spatulate, an active, ambitious, original subject, who will force his way through the world.

3^rdPhalanx, an active, ambitious, original subject, who will force his way through the world.

3^rd Phalanx:- This is most important, as when long and not thick, it shows that the lower world is normal and supports the upper phalanx. If this phalanx is very much longer than the other two, then the ambition and desire to rule is sordid not refined. If it is long and thick, gluttony must be added, or (as it is frequently found in practice) in a woman’s hand, the thick long third phalanx will show the capable cook. If the phalanx is waist like the long, gluttony will be absent, higher ideals will hold sway and health defects go. The health trouble will be the nerves, throat or lungs. If the phalanx is flabby, it will indicate a ruined stomach and dyspepsia.

Saturn:- The First phalanx longest indicates the Student thinker, inclined to be superstitious and fond of the occult.

3^rd Phalanx Longest:- Money worship, or if the type of subject is good, economical. If coarse or bad, miserliness. If thick, less studious. If waist like, fond of study. If the fingers are bent, it will give added shrewdness.

If the finger is short: balance and seriousness will be entirely lacking, while with a Spatulate tip, there will be no stamina. If Saturn only has a Conic tip, it will weaken the balance of the character. If pointed, it will indicate idealism and rampant superstition; the subject will be ruled by dreams, signs and omens, and the more certainly so if the first phalanx is long he Square tip will give practical commonsense and more of soberness; but if very square, there will be a tendency to melancholy. The Spatulate tip will add activity and originality and gives greater seriousness.

Modus Operandi

When examining the hands it is better to do so by daylight rather than by artificial light unless the latter is very good. Sit opposite the subject, permit-ting the light to fall on his hands and examine both hands, see what the character has been by the left, and how it has altered as shown in the right. In reference to what has been said before, it is better to rely rather on the right hand for information than on the left, and it is therefore advisable to ascertain whether one’s subject is right or left handed.

The natural position of the fingers must be noted, and if difficulty is experienced it is found useful to ask the subject to hold up his hand palm towards the reader; the fingers will then be found to assume their natural positions. First of all the predominating mount or finger and mount must be ascertained, and as one commences to read examine the three worlds, texture, flexibility, consistency, etc., then the thumb and fingers, nails, etc., and read each in its special significance to the predominating division, noticing how each influences and modifies the qualities of the type.

Be very careful not to make mistakes by omitting to examine everything bearing on the part of the hand examined.

Speak slowly and distinctly, without hesitation, and truthfully. You need not offend, however plainly you speak, if you use tact.

Be careful lest you frighten a sensitive and highly-strung subject, put yourself into your consultant’s place and feel for him or her.

Do not read the future until you are fully able to do so, and then strive to warn and to strengthen rather than to create an impression.

This study cannot be learnt in a day, so do not be discouraged if at first you fail-it is worth much attention, for by it the Book of Nature-the study of Man-is open to all.

Knowledge is power, let us therefore seek it that we may help others and be of use to ourselves.

The Female Hand

The characteristics of each type, as we have enumerated them, apply to women as well as to men, though we have, for convenience sake, made use throughout of the masculine pronoun; at the same time, there are certain modifications which seem to require exposition; as, for instance, the square spatulate types are much less pronounced in woman than in man, a fact shown by the greater suppleness and elasticity of the female hand in general, consequent on the differences existing between the male and female dispositions. The man creates, but the woman develops; to man belongs the faculty of principle, to woman the gift of form; our laws are made by man, but our morals by woman; and it has been justly said that man is the spirit of the woman, but woman is the soul of the man. Few women have their joints developed, so few women have the faculty of combination; in intellectual occupations they choose generally those requiring more tact than science, more activity of mind than of body, more imagination than judgment; if their hands are knotty, their intellects are, so to speak, diluted; they are then less impressionable, and less given to the inspirations of fancy. Women may be divided by this science into two classes; those with large and those with small thumbs; the first, more intelligent than sensitive, have a natural taste for history and similar studies; the second, more sensitive than intellectual, prefer romance. Consideration and clear headedness is the gift of those with large thumbs; love with them is more a matter of head than heart, but it is also more free and faithful, and a large-thumbed woman is never a coquette. With those who have a small thumb, on the contrary, love is their all in all, and though they are not so clever, they are infinitely more fascinating. The cares of womanhood, the sympathy which is natural to her, and the troubles of maternity, all require and enforce a high degree of intelligence; therefore the elementary hand is of extremely rare occurrence among women; and in communities where the men represent for the most part this type the empire of woman is supreme. Man under these circumstances is dead to the charms o youth, and nearly always marries a woman older than him, to be governed by her.

Indian women usually have the exterior phalange delicately squared, consequent on their willingness to adopt household cares. The women of the Oriental harems, on the other hand, devoted unto death, have, generally, small slim hands, with small thumbs. Such women as Charlotte Corday, Sophie de Condorcet, and Lucile Desmoulins, women, whose very souls were permeated only with one feverish ideal, had very pointed fingers. Take a woman with rather spatulate fingers and a small thumb; such a woman has an unlimited fund of affection and freedom of soul, love of activity, and knowledge of real life; she loves and understands horses, and all other animals; her ideas are practical and useful. The woman with square fingers and a small thumb will have everything in her house orderly and punctual, but without tyranny or despotism; by her example she keeps all things neat and under control. If she has a large thumb, it indicates a virago, tyrannical towards her servants and towards her children; at the same time, the square phalange may indicate narrow-mindedness, prudishness, and fussiness if the hand inclines to hardness. Little, soft, supple hands, with marked joints, and a pretty colour, indicate sharpness, vivacity and brilliancy; love with them must be gay, for their sole object is to be merry. If a woman has hands with a strong palm, conic fingers, and a small thumb, she is most accessible to rhetoric and the fervid language of love, which explains, palliates, extols all things; to please her one must be brilliant, for she prefer oratory and persuasion to logic and sound sense. Delicate, smooth-pointed fingers, with a little thumb and a narrow elastic palm, proclaim an indolent enthusiasm; such woman is governed more by heart than by sense and spirit; she do not care about the realities of life and conventional duties; she is pious, but hardly devoted; enthusiastic in spirit, but not in body.

Thus, it will be seen that, though the types have much the same characteristics among women as among men, yet, to read the character of a woman, as shown by her hand, requires more tact and self-confidence than is required in reading that of a man. But, without multiplying instances, we hope that the notes contained in this chapter may aid the would be Palmist to analyse and discern these differences; and having shortly enumerated the points of importance to be remembered with regard to Palmistry, we may safely launch the reader upon the more tempestuous and dangerous sea of Palmistry.
