The thumb of a person is important as there is an intimate connection between the thumb and the brain. According to a system of belief, a thumb center is supposed to exist in the brain. The thumb reveals the degree of logic, self assertion, vitality and the quantum of will power of the possessor. It is the key to the whole hand. The thumb is considered so revealing that many palmists rely on it to discover various aspects of the subjects, and base their reading of a person upon it. The value of the thumb can be realized from the fact that without it, we are unable to grasp anything properly. The absence of this faculty is debilitating.

The thumb is an index of whether the possessor can make use of his talents and ability or whether his success will depend on chance. One has to study the following: Size, position, shape, type and flexibility.

The thumb is of various sizes: long very long, short very short and average.

• Long thumb when the thumb is held against the adjoining finger (Jupiter finger and reaches the top of the third phalange it is treated as a long thumb. it is considered an excellent sign as the possessor has energy, initiative and the capacity for thought and action. the possessor has his own way of acting with a reasoned will.

• Very long thumb- when the thumb comfortably crosses the top of the third phalange of the Jupiter finger, it is treated as a long thumb. Such persons are governed by the head rather than the heart. They are of somewhat obstinate nature and are not always wise. They are Dominating and tyrannical, and have uncontrollable power. They may have to undergo pangs of separation.

• Short thumb- it reaches the base of the Jupiter finger or crosses it marginally. The possessor is indecisive and shifts from one idea to another. He has weak reasoning power, is emotional, and gets carried away by his feelings rather than applying his head. He lacks initiative, will power and is careless.

• Very short thumb- the thumb is nowhere near the base of the Jupiter Finger. The possessor goes from one extreme to another and may have to face poverty.

• Average (normal) thumb- the average thumb, when it is held against the adjoining finger, reaches half way of the third phalange. Persons with this type of thumb are of balanced mind and possess strength and will power.

We need also to consider the position of the thumb, Whether it is high set or low set, with a wide gap between the base of the Jupiter finger and the inner root of the thumb.

• High- set thumb-when the thumb grows out from the side of the hand in such a way that the distance between the thumb and the Jupiter is comparatively less. Persons of this type have lower grade intelligence and adaptability.

• Low – set thumb – the thumb is positioned low on the hand and opens wide from the hand. There is a large space between it and the finger of Jupiter. Such persons have abundant human qualities. They ate friendly, sociable, generous helpful and share their prosperity with others. They are sympathetic towards people in distress they are independent minded and have a distinct personality. However, they do not like to be closely attached to someone or to be obliged or dominated as they like freedom and independence.

• We shall now take up the shape of the thumb and how flexible it is.

• Large thumb – indicates strength of character. – The subject is governed by emotions and is easily influenced. He is generally a planner and does better in planning than operation.

• Thick thumb he hardly cares for others, feelings. He is a brute in his thinking and passions.

• Slender thumb this type attracts people and has a strong character. The slender thumb denotes poetic and artistic genius.

• Broad thumb the person has determination and physical strength. He is aggressive and overcome obstacles: does not mind using violence for achieving his aim.

• Elementary thumb – the thumb looks like a banana, a mass of flesh stuck to the hand Brutishness, obstinacy and lack of refinement are the characteristic of the possessor. He does not care about the language he uses or about the feelings of others.

• Flat or nervous thumb – such a thumb appears as if the flesh has been fully sucked out by pressing. it is soft and flat, and the possessor seems to have been overcome by nervous debility.

• Clubbed thumb (murderers thumb) - the first phalange is thick and round or broad and the nail short and very coarse in texture. Due to the thickness, coarseness and brutal nature of the thumb it is called the murderers thumb. Lord of 9th Bhava if in various Houses

First House: Fortune, respect by Govt., good manners, good morals, handsome, learned popular.

Second House: Learned popular, wealthy, and lusty and has happiness in regards to family and children.

Third House: Happy relations with brothers and sisters, wealthy, clever, good manners. It will be noted that third house is a dusthana; but lord of 9^th gives good results in this house, firstly because he is the lord of very auspicious house and secondly because he aspects the 9^th house (his own house) from this position making it powerful.

Fourth House: Comforts of houses, lands and conveyances, happiness in respect of mother.

Fifth House: Good children, native devoted to his preceptor (guru), good morals, religious minded, learned, respected, famous, and wealthy.

Sixth House: Fluctuating fortunes, not having good terms with maternal relations, troubled by enemies.

Seventh House: Good gains after marriage, learned, famous.

Eighth House: Unfortunate in every respect. This is the worst position for the lord of the 9^th; as 8^th is 12^th to 9^th and is, therefore, the house of loss for the 9^th.

Ninth House: (Own house)- very fortunate, gets all he wants. If 9^th may be in a movable sign he may go abroad and earn wealth, name fame there also. Has long lived and prosperous father. In this position, the lord of 9^th causes a powerful Raja- yoga.

Tenth House: Becomes king or like a king or minister, prime Minister, President, a high Govt. official a very success full businessman. This disposition also gives rise to a powerful Raja – yoga.

Eleventh House: Gains always devoted and obedient to elders and his Guru : clever charitable.

Twelfth House: Unfortunate spends lavishly on good causes and thereby becomes poor (there are many examples of people who give all their wealth for charitable purposes). It will be noted that 12^th being 4^th from 9^th the father of the native is also represented.

Ninth Bhava (House)- Represents loneliness, righteousness, preceptor, grandchildren, metaphysical studies, imagination and intuition, religious devotion, Law, sympathy, philosophy, science and literature, lasting fame leadership, charities, communication with sprites, ghosts and the like, long journeys, foreign travels and father. Faith, wisdom, divine worship and fortune.

Saturn owns two signs namely Capricorn and Acquires in the horoscope of any native. Broadly, it controls 1/6^th of population. When the aspects of Saturn are taken into consideration (Saturn has 3^rd, 7^th (bhagya)), meditation, forethought, places of worship, charity, sacrifices, teaching, dharma, long journey, sea and air travel, higher education, foreign travel, knees.

If the week Moon occupies the 9^th in a debilitated state or Venus is bad and occupies evil conjunctions or if the lord of the 9^th is debilitated, the native will be guilty of improper relations with his preceptor’s wife.

If the lord of 9^th is in 8^th or any moveable sign, the child will be born when father is not in the place.

If the lord of 9^th joins the navamsa of Jupiter, the person becomes righteously inclined and charitable in disposition.

If the 9^th is occupied by Venus, Ketu and the Sun, proficiency in miscellaneous subjects is to be predicted; Ketu in the 9^th makes a man interested in mesmerism.

If the lord 9^th is in the 4^th expected by Saturn, the person will be charitable in disposition, but irritable in temperament.

If the lord of 1^st and the 9^th are powerful and the Sun is expected by benefices, the native will be obedient and dutiful to his father.

If the lord of 9^th is in quadrants or in trines, the person becomes well acquainted with metaphysical lore provide such a combination has the aspect of Jupiter or Jupiter is in Kendra.

If Rahu and Saturn occupy the 9^th and otherwise badly situated, the person will be cold- hearted, engaged in inflicting miseries and injuries on innocent people and quite unsympathetic.

Mars and Ketu in the 9^th with Jupiter in the 2^nd, and Mercury, the Sun and Venus in the 5^th, the 6^th and the 7^th respectively, make the man very rich.

If the lord of the Ascendant joins the 9^th or aspects its lord and if Jupiter occupies an exalted position, the person will be highly learned in mystical philosophy. The 12th House

Many classics have written about the 12^th house, 12^th Lord and significations of 12^th house. Some difference has been noted and even the modern writers of astrology including late Dr. B. V. Raman had contributed their own experiences with regards to 12^th house. All agree that 12^th house is an inauspicious house though different significations of 12^th house include Moksha/ libration (enlightenment), pleasure of bed, sleep, expenditure, imprisonment/ confinement/ by way of abduction or otherwise, loss, seclusion, sorrow, life after death (Your next life) (a difficult situation to predict), left eye. There is difference of opinion to among other significations but all agree that the 12^th is representative of left eye, Moksha, expenditure and also pleasures of bed. It would also be apt to mention that Karakas (significations) for 12^th House are Saturn and Ketu.

Full Signification of the 12^th House

The 12^th house rules secret foes, foreign travels, criminals, Smugglers, anti- social elements apart from expenditure, reforms and planning. When the 12^th house is afflicted any cruel means may satisfy the end. From this house one can lean about the natives wanderings, misfortunes, death of children (8^th from 5^th), hospitality of father, paternal wealth (4^th from 9^th) liberal outlook, comforts, signity, disturbed, sleep, mental worry, fear from enemy, liberation from pain, discharge of debts, imprisonment, misery, injury, harm, hanger, disputes, termination from service. Loss of wife, the conditions of left eye, worries and anxieties of life and his ability to renounce.

The 12^th house an important house to understand the hidden life of the native, it reveals the tendencies towards retirement, escape, sacrifice and secluded service. It is hidden, emotional, intuitive and psychic sign. At the same time it refers to serious states of ill health and to incitation.

Saturn: Impudence, poverty, childlessness, defective limbs, fear from enemies.

Rahu: Sinful acts, spendthrift, dropsy.

Ketu: Sinful acts, expenditure on bad things, destruction of wealth, forbidden deeds, eye disease.

JATAKA PARIJATA: another classical Sanskrit text, gives the following results.

Moon: Living in a foreign country.

Sun: Loss of limb, wandering, have much perseverance and will have sons.

Mars: Hating relatives, poverty and difficulty in getting a wife.

Jupiter: Secptical to religion, indecisiveness wandering, evil mind.

Venus: Loss of relation, lending to become a rake, loss of wealth.

Mercury: Hating others, poverty.

Saturn: Lack of intelligence, inconvincible, poverty, and tendency to cheat others.

Ketu: Fickle- mindedness, loss of wealth.

So according to classical Sanskrit texts, all the planets in the 12^th house produce bad results. Practical case studies have revealed that the above statements do not stand test with reference to modern times.

The Sun in Scorpio: Effects

Scorpio is the other sign owned and ruled by MARS. Both the planets i.e. the Sun and Mars are energetic planets and become responsible for fire and explosions. Before we discuss in details the effects of the Sun in Scorpio, it would be apt to say that the span of Scorpio is as under with reference to Nakshtras and their:

Planets:

00, 00 to 03.20 degree of Scorpio or

10. 00 to 13. 20 degree of Vishakha ruled by Jupiter.

00. 3. 20 to 16. 40 degree of Libra or

00. 00 to 13. 00 degrees of Jeystha ruled by Mercurry.

The Sun in Scorpio especially up to 16.40 degrees is capable of giving native a beautiful face and bright eyes though the Nakshtra Annuradha belongs to Saturn but at the same time where the combination of planets is not good, the native gets cruel looks- apparently on account of Mars and Saturn.
