Mars and Mercury: Basic of Astrology, Chapter I, Part - 1

A horoscope is simply a map of the heavens showing the exact positions, at a given time, of the Sun, Moon and planets within the framework of the zodiac in relation to a particular place on Earth. The mathematical process of casting a horoscope involves the science of astronomy, while interpreting all the factors in the horoscope chart involves the art of astrology. I shall not explain the technical and mathematical process of calculating the actual horoscope, but provide3 an in-depth scope of a particular planet of Zodiac sign and respective house with suggestive remedies. There are twelve parts of the Zodiac sign called Rashis. Each sign of the Zodiac is 30 degrees in extent. The Zodiacal signs are tabulated as below:-

Group of Signs

The signs can be categorized into three groups from Aries onwards. They are termed as moveable or cardinal, fixed and common or mutual. Moveable signs indicate an energetic and dynamic nature; fixed signs, a tenacious and stubborn nature; common signs, a changeable nature.

Each sign starting from Aries onwards is also subsequently termed as odd (or male) and even (or female). All odds signs are cruel and masculine and all even signs are mild and feminine.

Mars and Mercury: Preface

Instinct, Freewill, Karma, God and Creation are the topics which are frequently discussed. People from all walks of life lean on these words.

The two planets discussed here are `Mars’ and `Mercury’ and in one of the earlier books we had talked of Jupiter and Saturn.

Jupiter is a planet which signifies the inherent potential of a person and each individual has certain propensities as is seen in our daily interactions. Saturn is the significator of the efforts and the `NOW’, which determines the potential that can be tapped by work and free will. A weak Jupiter and a strong Saturn is perhaps an unlucky person. Mars and Mercury set the pace in life.

Mars is the planet which governs strength, action, and on the extreme side i.e. war while Mercury is the planet of intellect, mind and mathematics in one’s behavior in all walks of life.

A strong Mars may make a person aggressive, having leadership qualities and the will to do it – a man of actions; but if this is coupled with a weak Mercury governing the calculations and intellect, he may perform actions which are perceived as foolishly aggressive. A strong Mars with a strong Mercury brings forth a person who is balanced and leads a good life. Here again we need to have a holistic approach as the PATRA i.e. the vessel length and breadth of which is governed by Jupiter. The actions of a politician, bureaucrat, a businessman and for that matter every individual at each level depends on the play of these two planets – Mars and Mercury.

Mars, if strong, produces a Kshatriya (fighting instincts) and Mercury, a Vaish (businessman), and perhaps the caste system of today was in the past more from the perspective of putting a person in a profession towards which he by his inherent nature is aligned with.

In the present context, however, the morals and ethics have changed, which have to be borne in mind while studying a horoscope. A successful businessman today will perhaps have a weak Mars and a fairly strong Mercury. This is because a weak Mars connected with the house of business or self makes him to be a master deceiver, hits from the back and will not be straight forward. These qualities are evident in today’s Yuga but it may lead to problems in married life and perhaps have relations outside marriage if Venus is not strong.

My book is a collection of composed material available in fragments, groups and sets to give the reader an understanding of the two planets in a holistic manner.

The various chapters on the impact of planets, nature, their transits etc. should be interpreted in relation to other planets as written above.

I have written this book for a layman as well as the students of astrology and the pundits, as I believe, this compilation will provoke thoughts.

My thanks to my mother Dr. Krishna Saksena who has encouraged me to write and has been a motivator. The freedom to do and spend time cannot be possible without your wife’s support and my gratitude to Renu and above all the smile of my daughter, Vrinda – a Gudiya, is a part of my energy invigoration.

Astrology is a combination of logic and statistical evidence, and like any other science, is based on assumptions, the research of which will be an ever ongoing process. b) Means of livelihood will be acquired or there will be success in implementing new plans

c) Those married will get happiness from children

d) Any disputes will meet a favorable end

e) Life will pass happily with merriment

f) Social status will rise

g) Public confidence and political works will yield success

h) Enemies will surrender themselves

II Results of Muntha

1 The Muntha is an important point in the annual chart. It is located in the lagna at the time of birth. Each year, the Munth progresses by one rashi. Thus, when the second year of life begins, the Muntha has progressed in the rashi falling in the second house from the birth lagna. At the commencement of the third year of birth, the Muntha is in the sign falling in the third house from the birth lagna, and so on.

2 The Muntha is placed in the sixth bhava of the annual chart. Its effects are as follows:

a) Muntha in the sixth bhava results in physical weakness, increase in enemies, fear of diseases, thieves and government, destruction of work and wealth, increase in evil and regret for the work done

b) Muntha in the sixth bhava leads to physical weakness, suffering due to enemies, loss in business and wisdom, ailments and fear of thieves.

3 Results:

a) Muntha in the sixth bhava is considered inauspicious

b) There may be laziness and ailments. There may also be an accident

c) There will be excitement and restlessness in’ the mind

d) The conduct may be irritable. Frequent headaches may cause pain

e) There may be fear from worthless enmity and enemies

f) There may be an inclination towards sinful deeds and evil conditions may arise

g) Interest in other women may lead to dishonor

h) There will be carelessness and tensions in work (business or service)

i) Wealth may be lost due to theft. One may have to incur debts

j) Quarrels may take place worthlessly

III Results of Muntha in the sign of a Graha

1 Interpretations are given according to the sign in which Muntha is placed. In the annual chart Muntha is placed in Taurus, the rashi of Venus –

a) This year there will be material pleasures and increase in fortune

b) If unmarried, marriage may take place

c) Interest in sensual pleasures will increase

d) There will be delight in merriment, music, dance, artistic fields and festivities

e) There will be easy flow of income

f) Expenditures will be incurred on acquiring fancy items, ornaments and worldly pleasures

2 When Muntha is associated with or aspected by Venus, or placed in the rashis of Venus (Taurus and Libra), it gives wisdom, pleasures and a partner. There is widespread fame.

IV Results of Munthesh

1 The lord of the house in which Muntha is placed is called Munthesh. Placement of Munthesh in the tenth bhava of the annual chart gives the following results –

a) Munthesh in the tenth bhava will result in success beyond expectations

b) If in employment, there may be chance of promotion

c) Wishes and expectations will be fulfilled

d) Vehicles, comforts, land and house may be obtained

I Results of Jupiter as the Year Lord:

1 The planet which is the lord of the year in the annual chart is called Varshesha. Jupiter, the Varshesha of this year’s annual chart is extremely powerful.

2 An extremely powerful Jupiter in the annual chart gives happiness from family, wealth, fame, auspicious celebration at home, gain of treasure and acquisition of a prestigious position.

3 Results:

a) Good thoughts will rise in the mind, consequently it will lead to success in religious and auspiciouis works

4 Mercury as the Year Lord

(a) In full strength: Recognition through intellectual deeds (writing, reading, research, study of scriptures), elevation in professional status, benefit from new undertakings, cooperation from near and dear ones.

(b) Of medium strength: The above mentioned results are available only to a lesser degree. Additionally, there may be problems due to intempereance in speech and argument.

5. Jupiter as the Year Lord

(a) In full strength: Comforts at home, inclination towards religious and virtuous pursuits, clarity of thought, increase in earnings, wealth and reputation, co-operation even from opponents, and acquisition of hidden wealth.

(b) Of medium strength: The above mentioned results accrue to a lesser extent. In addition, there is association with those in authority, and inclination towards study of books (and scriptures!). If Jupiter is involved in an Ishrafa (q.v.) with a malefic, there is loss of wealth.

(c) Weak: Loss of wealth and comforts, decline of virtue, disgrace, separation from spouse and children, physical ailment.

6. Venus as the Year Lord

(a) In full strength: Good health, plenty to earn, eat and enjoy, inclination towards study of scriptures, elevation of professional status, conjugal bliss, and varied comforts.

(b) Of medium strength: Mediocre earnings, increase of opponents, loss of fame, undisclosed anguish or ailment.

(c) Weak: Mental anguish, disgrace, obstacle to profession, opposition from friends and children, failure in undertakings, illness to wife or conjugal unhappiness.

7. Saturn as the Year Lord

(a) In full strength: Success in litigation, acquisition of newe house, land or property, gains from the western direction (from the “Yavanas”), good health, leadership of fellow-beings.

(b) Of medium strength: The above mentioned results are obtained to an ordinary extent only. There is decrease in earnings, and benefit from servants, camels, buffaloes, etc.

(c) Weak: Failure in all undertakings, varied problems, fear from foes, opposition from friends, spouse, children and relatives, and general deprivation.

The results as described above are fairly general in nature. They must be interpreted keeping in mind such varied factors as the location of the year lord in the annual chart, the influence of other planets on the year lord, the involvement of the year lord in the various Tajika yogas, etc. Needless to stress that any results issuing forth from the annual chart will be dependent on a similar promise in the birth chart.
