2.7 Use of Lagna

2.7.1 In Vedic astrology, transit is normally seen with reference to Moon sign lagna. Although Moon sign lagna holds the prime place, the classics have given permission to study the effects of transit from other available lagnas, like Ascendant, Sun sign, dasha lord sign or the natal planet itself etc. These consideration may arise when the Moon sign lagna may not meet the entire requirement or to seek an alternate opinion. For example let us consider the case of twins or of two natives born couple of hours apart on the same day. They may have the same Moon sign and positioning of planets in different signs. We know from our experience that the transit results in the two cases will be different because the ascendants may change and with this the houses and the lordship of the planets would also change. Some of the lagnas of higher divisional charts may also change. During a day, all the 12 ascendants will rise on the eastern horizon in a cyclic manner, at an average interval of two hours. Such situations would need use of alternate lagnas.

2.7.2 Always remember, the transit is a supplementary chart to be studied invariably along with the natal chart. The transit by itself cannot manufacture results, it only delivers what has been promised in the natal chart at a time decided by the dasha system. The great classic, Mansagiri, gives a telling simile pertaining to the good & bad results as a tree, whose seed is Moon, the fruit is the ascendant, and the divisional charts are the tastes.

2.8 Other Natal References

2.8.1 We can analyze transits with respect to lagna- the ascendant, Moon lagna, Sun lagna and Paaka lagna (sign where Jupiter is posited). Lagna is the hub of vitality and one’s personality in a chart. Using the Ashtakavarga tablets, we can decipher whether the transits of a planet in a house from lagna is favourable or not. We can see which house a planet is transiting in, with respect to natal lagna, and expect the planet to influence the matters of that house. The influence exerted by a transit planet on the house occupied by it depends on its inherent nature and its significations in the natal chart. For example, Jupiter transiting in Taurus may give marriage to someone born in Scorpio lagna (if marriage is otherwise also seen), because Taurus is the 7^th house from Scorpio. Saturn transiting in Aries may give relationship problems or marital problems for someone born in Libra lagna, because Aries is the 7^th house from Libra.

2.8.2 We can also look at the aspects cast by transiting planets. Suppose Jupiter is transiting in Virgo and someone has lagna in Scorpio. Jupiter aspects Taurus, the 7^th house from Scorpio, when he is in Virgo. So Jupiter can give marriage during his Virgo transit also. We can look at the aspects cast by transiting planets on the signs containing the natal houses and the natal planets. Suppose someone has lagna in Scorpio and Venus in Pisces in natal chart. Then the 7^th house is in Taurus and Venus, the significator of marriage, is in Pisces. Jupiter transiting in Virgo aspects both Taurus and Pisces and hence he may give marriage.

2.8.3 Thus we should look at the signs occupied and aspected by planets in their transit and find out which houses and planets occupy those signs in the natal chart. Based on that, we should guess the results given by the planets. A planet occupying or aspecting a sign in transit influences the matters signified by the houses and planets stationed in that sign in the natal chart. The exact nature of the influence exerted by a planet depends on its inherent nature and the matters it stands for in the natal chart. For example, if the 5^th lord in the natal chart is occupying the 8^th house from natal lagna in transit, some troubles related to children may be expected. If Mars is the 8^th lord in the natal chart and aspects, in transit, the signs occupied by Venus and 7^th lord in the natal chart, then some disturbances in marital life may be expected.

2.8.4 A malefic planet transiting in Janma Rasi (Moon sign) may give mental worries and a malefic planet transiting in natal lagna may affect the vitality of the native and create obstacles in his efforts. On the other hand, Paaka lagna explicitly stands for the physical self and a malefic planet transiting in Paaka lagna may give bodily complaints. Similarly planets occupying or aspecting Arudha-padas in transit may give relevant results. For example, Saturn’s transit in A10 can be bad for career and Jupiter’s transit in A9 is good for fortune and so on.

2.8.5 Sahams are useful in transit analysis also. Sahams are the significant points in the zodiac. For example, when the 7^th lord or Venus transits close to Vivaha-saham, one may get married. When the 6^th lord or 8^th lord or Mars or Rahu transits close to kali saham, one may have an accident.

2.6 Basic Transit Rules

6) If the close conjunction or aspect(s) of planets in transit involve two or more FBs with reference to a particular ascendant, it triggers happy events pertaining to all the planets.

7) If one of the planets involved in close conjunction or aspect in a transit planetary movement is a FM, it harms the significations of the other FB(s) involved with reference to a particular ascendant.

8) If both or all the planets forming close conjunction in transit with reference to a particular ascendant are FMs, it harms the significations of all the planets involved.

9) Whenever any weak transit planet forms close conjunction with or become closely aspected by natal FM(s), it triggers a significant undesirable incident concerning that weak transit planet.

10) Whenever any strong transit planet forms close conjunction with or become closely aspected by natal FM(s), it triggers a mild unfavorable incident concerning that strong transit planet.

11) Whenever any strong transit FB forms close conjunction with or become closely aspected by natal FB(s), it triggers significant happy incidents pertaining to that strong transit planet.

12) Whenever any weak transit FB forms close conjunction with or become closely aspected by natal FB(s), it triggers hopes or non-significant happy incidents pertaining to that weak transit planet.

13) The transit effects are always seen with reference to the natal Moon/ ascendant. However transit effects w.r.t. mid-heaven or dasha lords may also give important clues.

14) In setting the trends, the sub-period lord has maximum say. However, the transit impacts mentioned above supersede the trends of the sub-period lord.

15) The malefic transit impact of slow moving planets like Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu are more pronounced when, during the course of their close conjunctions/aspects, they move more slowly as compared to their normal speed or become stationary. This is true both for natal and transit influences.

16) The close conjunction of Rahu stimulates excessive stress resulting in suffering in the end; while Ketu in similar position generates miseries straightway as soon as it comes into close conjunction/ aspect.

17) When Rahu or Ketu transit over Saturn, sudden and unexpected development takes place.

18) During the sub-periods of the FBs, the benefic transit impacts re stronger while malefic transit impacts are mild. If the sub-period lord is strong, then the transit benefic influence cause significant happy events.

19) During the sub-periods of FMs, the benefic transit impacts are mild while the malefic transit impacts are more severe. If the transit benefic influences are strong, the benefic results may be comparatively better but with some delay.

20) The duration of the transit results ceases to exist s soon as the transit close conjunction or aspect separates. The orb of separation as explained earlier would depend upon the natal strength of the planets on which the transit influences have been created.

21) Whenever a transiting FM transits the MEP of any house, it afflicts that house as well as the aspected house(s). However a transit FM never afflicts its own Mooltrikone house.

22) A transit FM will afflict always its natal position by conjunction or aspect, except when natally placed in its own Mooltrikone house.

23) A natal FM will afflict always its transit position by aspect even when transiting its own Mooltrikone house.

24) A natal FM will afflict always its transit position by conjunction, except when placed in its own Mooltrikone house.

2.6 Basic Transit Rules

Part 1

2.6.1 The astrology or Jyotish Shastra basically comprises of three Skandhas, Namely Ganita/ Siddhanta, dealing with astronomy and mathematical astrology; Jatkam/ Hora dealing with natal predictive astrology or everything that happens to a human being; and Samhita or mundane astrology, which deals with collective application of astrology on natural phenomenon etc. It is a matter of great interest to all of us that as per Narada Purana, transit of planets are included in the Samhita Skandha, although apparently it should have been covered in Jatak Skandha. That is why, our classics on Jatak/ Hora, have so scantly discussed the transit.

2.6.2 The significations of each planet and house as given in natal astrology holds good for transit also. Similarly, the functional malefic or benefic nature of various planets for each lagna is also the same in natal or transit astrology. Horoscopic indications like positions, aspects and/ or conjunction of planets in modifying the results remain the same. There are different methods for estimating strength of a planet in a chart. The most commonly used are Shadbala and Saptvargiya/ Dusvargiyabala. In addition there are methods given in Jaimini system and Nadi System. The strength of a planet is usually determined in five ways as under:

i) The position of the planet with regard to its exaltation, own, friendly, neutral, detrimental, inimical or depression sign or house.

ii) The benefic or malefic nature of the planet with reference to the Moon sign or the ascendant.

iii) The Baladhi and Deeptadhi Awastha of the planet.

iv) A planet is said to possess strength when it is retrograde or hemmed between benefics and is weak if combust, eclipsed or hemmed between malefics.

v) As per Ashtakvarga, the number of benefic dots/ bindus (over 30) in the house, as per Sarvastak Varga, being transited by the planet and the number of dots (over 3) in the Bhinnastak Varga of the planet.

2.6.3 There are two types of indications in life, namely general trend and significant events. The general trend is generated by the planetary periods while the significant events are triggered by the transit. The significant events can be in line with the general trend, or against the prevalent general trend. The significant events are triggered by the interplay of the relationship between transit planets and natal planets/MEPs. The results generated depend upon the significations ruled by their Mooltrikone houses, the significations ruled by their houses of placement, either natally or in transit, and/ or the significations ruled by the natal house(s) whose MEPs are under transit impact. This is called the triple transit triggering influence (TTT), as it is true for the three possible combinations of transit influence i.e. transit over natal, transit over transit, and natal over transit. In other words:

1) Whenever any weak natal planet/MEP is transited by functional malefic (FM)/(s), it triggers a significant undesirable incident concerning that weak natal planet or that weak house, whichever is the case. This is more so when the weak natal planet or the lord/significator of the weak house is weak in transit as well.

2) Whenever any strong natal planet/MEP is transited by FM(s), it triggers a mild unfavorable incident concerning that strong natal planet or that strong house, whichever is the case.

3) Whenever any strong natal functional benefic (FB)/ MEP is transited by FB(s), it triggers significant happy incidents pertaining to that strong natal planet or that strong house, whichever is the case.

4) Whenever any weak natal FB/MEP is transited by FB(s), it triggers hopes or non-significant happy incidents pertaining to that weak natal planet or that weak house, whichever is the case.

5) Whenever planets in transit form close conjunctions amongst themselves, the happenings occur depending upon their functional nature in connection with the houses with reference to a particular ascendant.
