1.
Introduction
1.1
“Nabha” in Hindi means sky or space and the sky is wide spread and unlimited.
The number of combinations/yoga is also very large as many as around 3600.
However as per Yavan Acharya 1800 varieties have been recorded. The Nabhas (or
celestial) yogas are a special category of yogas in astrology which are often
overlooked by a casual astrologer. These should become the starting point of a
horoscopic analysis, because they shed tremendous light on the nature, the
inclinations & reactions of a native, alongwith a glimpse of the promise
inherent in the horoscope as well as the areas of miseries & failure.
However they can not provide the exact details of these aspects. Thus they
provide the inclinations and broad life pattern of a native, which are always
applicable without limitation of any specific period and hence are very useful
for quick and snap shot prediction. They are celestial because they depend upon
pattern in which the planets are located in the zodiac.
1.2
Unlike other yogas, Nabhas yogas do not depend upon the house ownership of
planets; but some of them depend upon the nature of the signs that the planets
predominantly occupy. Since planets stay in a sign for a certain span of time,
yogas based on the location of planets in such specific signs will tend to
occur in the chart of several people born at or about any given time. Then
there are yogas which depend upon the placement of planets in different houses
from the lagna. These will be different for different people depending upon the
sign rising in lagna. The results of Nabhas yogas are felt throughout one’s
life and are not dependant on any dasha pattern to manifest their results.
However, their benefic and malefic propensities manifest more freely if the
operating dashas are also in conforming with their indications. As in most of
the other yogas, Rahu & Ketu are not considered in formation of Nabhas
Yogas.
2. Major Categories of
Nabhas Yogas
2.1
There are four major categories of Nabhas Yogas as under:
a) Ashraya (i.e. refuge/ shelter- where planets take refuge) Yogas: It
includes three- Rajju, Moosal, & Nala Yogas. Their formation depends on
whether the planets take refuge in movable, fixed or dual signs.
b) Dala (rival group or faction) Yogas: It includes two-Maala and
Sarpa/ Bhujang Yogas.
c) Aakriti (appearance) Yogas: These include three divisions-Kendra
group consisting six –Gada, Shakata, Pakshi, Vajra, Yava, & Kamala Yoga;
Non-Kendra group consisting of three- Vaapi, Shringata, & Hala Yoga; and
the Arc group consisting of 11- Yoopa, Shara, Shakti, Danda, Nauka, Koota,
Chhatra, Dhanush, Ardha-chandra, Chakra, & Samudra yogas. These yogas are
formed by placement of planets in specific houses of the horoscope. One of
these, Gada yoga, has four variant; so the effective number of yogas may be
counted as 23.
d) Sankhya (number) Yogas: These include seven- Veena, Daama, Paasha,
Kedar, Shoola, Yuga and Gola yoga. Their formation depends upon the number of
houses over which the seven planets are distributed. Depending upon the varying
planetary combinations/lagna, that are possible, these yogas can have 127
variants.
Notes:
1.
The total variations of Aakriti yogas
(23 in number) added to those of Sankhya
yoga (127 in number) give us a total of 150 yogas for each lagna. For the 12
lagna, the number of yogas would be 150x 12= 1800. This total does not include Aashraya & Dala Yoga.
2.
By
definition, yoga belonging to one group may coincide with yogas belonging to
another group. In such cases, following rules must apply;
i) The Sankhya Yoga are seen in every chart,
they are to be considered relevant only in the absence of both Aashraya & Aakriti Yoga.
ii) The Aashraya yoga get neutralized when Aakriti Yoga manifest in a chart.
iii) Sankhya yoga called Kedar,
Shoola & Yuga become inoperative if they coincide with an Aashrayayoga. However Gola yoga
in a chart manifests irrespective of whether Aashray yoga is there or not.
