Full Moon in Pisces: Let’s Get Lost

I’m four days into a two-week “staycation” – that is, a vacation spent entirely at home. I’ll admit that the astrologer in me found it a bit strange to begin this vacation just after the Sun had entered Virgo, the sign of work. But fortunately, this Friday brings a Full Moon in Pisces, with its seasonal call to review the balance between work (Sun in Virgo) and rest (Moon in Pisces).

I’ve traveled more than usual in the past nine months, and on the face of it that might seem like a series of mini-vacations. But every trip has included at least one work-related event – not to mention the logistical rigors of arranging care for the cats and house, packing, and making sure the travel arrangements are in order. It’s a cliché, I know, but every “vacation” has left me more desperately in need of rest. Things had definitely reached the point where I was too tired to be very effective in my work, let alone creative. And so, I put out the “Gone Fishing” sign (Pisces reference?) and took a time-out.

So far, I’ve had no problem downshifting. I’m taking naps, watching movies – and bit by bit, taking our house apart, cleaning it, and putting it back together. Next month we’ll celebrate 15 years of living in this house, by far the longest I’ve lived anywhere in my life, and as you might expect we’ve accumulated a vast amount of junk and crud during that decade and a half. Last month we cleaned out the scariest Black Hole of Crap in our house – the closet in the master bedroom. Inspired, I turned to our long-neglected pantry. Then, I managed to file and throw away baskets of junk that had been collecting dust in a corner of my office for years. I’ve even color-coded my client files!

The floodgates opened, and now it seems there’s no stopping me. As I wrapped up my work last week, I found myself daydreaming about cleanser and little organizing shelves for the cupboards. I’d sneak odd half-hours between clients and answering email to clear out a drawer or cabinet. It seemed that the tasks I’d spent years avoiding had suddenly become my refuge; setting things right was more refreshing than an afternoon power nap.

Those close to me were surprised enough to learn that I’d be taking a real, honest-to-goodness vacation. When they found out how I planned to spend my time – cleaning, purging, and organizing the house – they were aghast. “But don’t you want to just… relax?” they’d ask. But the thing is, all this hard Virgo work has actually been surprisingly restful. Not sitting at the computer for hours on end is restful. Not answering email, planning projects, writing articles, or booking appointments is restful. Being in my body as I sort, scrub, rearrange, and vacuum is very restful indeed.

Pisces’ territory is the realm of retreat and restoration, including sleep, the daily core dump of our unconscious data. But there are ways to retreat and rest that don’t involve sleep at all, such as immersion in the single-minded pursuit of some task – like housecleaning, for instance. This Pisces Full Moon makes aspects to Mars in Scorpio and Pluto in Capricorn, so perhaps there is more to my little housecleaning flirtation than meets the eye. Scorpio and Pluto are reminders that even a seemingly innocuous interest may become a preoccupation, compulsion, or even obsession as we use it to coax the unconscious out into the light, where we can wrestle with it. The more formidable the unseen foe, the greater the power that can potentially be released. We need only give ourselves some measure of daily, restful downtime – Pisces’ bailiwick – to access that power.

After four days I finally felt a desire to sit down at the computer again to write this, so I suspect my zealous embrace of Olympic-caliber housecleaning will fall short of a full-blown obsession. In the meantime, I’m doing this work with the intention of appeasing the feng shui gremlins of my subconscious. And while this passion lasts, I’m enjoying one of life’s greatest pleasures: waking up in the morning with delicious enthusiasm that “today, I get to do that!” Today, I get to jettison a little more of the debris that’s been cluttering my personal force field. Today, I get to make room for new and joyful things. Today, I will get thoroughly and deliciously lost, happily scrubbing and sweeping and tossing and rearranging, setting my house – and my spirit – in order. Today, though I appear to be working very hard indeed, I am in fact resting – and very much at peace.

Mars in Scorpio: Sexy Time, Revenge, and Cleaning up the ick

Geez, Mars is already about to move into Scorpio (August 23rd)? It seems like it’s only been in Libra for about twenty minutes. Although maybe that’s just in comparison to the approximate geologic age that it spent in Virgo.

Mars is a planet of work, war, and survival. It’s considered strong in Scorpio, one of the signs that it rules. The other is Aries, a sign utterly lacking in guile or introspection.* Scorpio is entirely different animal, and Mars awakens somewhat darker territory in the sign of the Scorpion than it does in Aries. Here’s a capsule review of what to expect while Mars transits Scorpio (August 23 through October 5):
  • Sexy time. Been neglecting the intimate side of your long term relationship? Sometimes, a cigar is just a cigar, and you’re just not in the mood, you’re tired, or the cat threw up on the bed. Hey, it happens. But sometimes, flagging sexual interest is a symptom of a deeper problem in a relationship. Maybe the bickering that’s common during a Mars in Libra transit (since July 3) cut a little more deeply this time around. After all, it came at the end of Saturn’s long sojourn through Libra (since October 29, 2009), during which a great many couples have been engaged in protracted contract negotiations about the future of their relationships. Now, before Saturn enters Scorpio (on October 5, 2012), is probably a good time time to take a peek under the hood and make sure everything’s okay between you and your partner.
  • Revenge/fight-to-the-death time. While Mars was in Libra, the sign of Open Enemies, it’s possible you had an unpleasant encounter with a long-time nemesis or even discovered a brand new foe. Mars in Scorpio can compel you to take one of two approaches moving forward: The High Road, characterized by being the bigger person and letting go of grievances. Or, the Low Road, in which one fights dirty and refuses to give up until the other person cries uncle. Far be it from me to advocate one road over the other (though if you take the high road, it’s highly likely I’ll be in Scotland afore ye) – especially since either of these approaches can also be used in the service of noble causes such as defending the defenseless and furthering causes about which you feel passionate.
  • Cleaning the dark, icky space under the kitchen sink time.  I’ve been inspired, of late, by a website (I am warning you: if profanity offends you, do not click on the link. You will find even the title offensive.) that offers tough love and motivation for those who wish to take charge of their homes and whip them into shape. For whatever reason, I was ripe for this message and in the past few weeks have tackled a myriad of really unsavory, daunting household tasks that I’d been putting off literally for years. Housework is as apt a metaphor as you’ll find for the process of tackling the dark, icky spaces in your psyche. Just ask Lady Macbeth. If you have untidiness under the sink, in the closet, or picking on your id or your superego or whatever, Mars in Scorpio is just the kind of fearless coach you need to help you sort it out and move on.
As always, you can gain additional insight into this transit by considering which house of your birth chart Scorpio falls in (unsure? see this blog post) and which, if any, of your natal planets will receive aspects from Mars, especially by conjunction, square, or opposition.

You’ve got from August 23 until October 5, folks. Get your engines running.

* Before you write to tell me about the calculating and insightful Aries you know or in fact are, please remember that I’m talking about the archetype of Aries. People are not signs. If you were born with the Sun in Aries, you may have many archetypal Aries traits, but lots of other stuff in your chart may modify Aries’ messages in your chart.

Venus square Saturn: Love the rock.

love the rockThe other day I’m hiking around the World Famous San Diego Zoo (right? you folks in South Africa, weigh in: have you heard of this zoo? Is it really world famous?) and on my way to visit the lions I pass some bears. The weather’s nice, I’m in no particular hurry, and I haven’t really taken any time to look at the bears before, so I slow down for a little visit. They all look – you know, big, brown, bearlike. I drift along and find myself standing in front of the habitat of the Alaskan Brown Bear.

She’s hanging out in her little bathing pool, washing her beautiful little face with paws that are surprisingly dainty, given her general dimensions (huge). Eventually she considers herself, apparently, suitably gorgeous, and emerges from the pool, like Venus on the half shell. This dame is enormous. She sort of lumbers around, shifting her girth from side to side; she stands directly in front of me, yawns, and shakes the water from her fur. Then she settles herself down next to an absolutely huge boulder that’s been placed in her habitat. She lays both paws, and then her head, on the smooth, cool, gray rock. She looks as comfortable as if she’s lying on a feather pillow.

This morning, absently perusing my Pocket Astrologer, I noted that later tonight – just as I hope to be cuddled up on the couch with my sweetie, eating Thai food, drinking champagne, and watching a movie – Venus will square Saturn. And my initial reaction was, “Damn! There goes my lovely weekend, my sweet date.” The restaurant will be overloaded and our takeout will be late and cold; the champagne flat; the movie a disappointment.

Well, maybe it will, maybe it won’t. And if it is… maybe it’s not a punishment, but a gift. Maybe there’s something better we could be doing, something more satisfying (although it’d have to be pretty damn good to trump that little Thai/movie date scenario), and Saturn might roll some huge boulders out into our path to try to divert us to something different, something marvelous.
And that’s when I thought about that bear, snuggling up to that big old, hard-looking rock. That bear was the picture of Venusian pleasure; I think if you’d offered her a Sealey Posturepedic at that moment, she would have declined. She was enjoying her Saturnian rock; it was something cool and comfortable to lean on.

And that’s when it hit me. Ah… it’s simply a question of attitude, isn’t it? When you’re trying to have a good time and the world rolls a rock in your path, well, there’s only one thing to do:
Love the rock.

Venus will square Saturn on  September 3, 2012, 00:43 am PDT.
