Mars & Mercury: Mercury in Various Houses, Chapter XX, Part - 15

Continuation…

Dr. Shanker Adawal

My thoughts: Though Acharya and Gunakar have said that the person is religious, I believe that religion is in the jurisdiction of the Ninth House and hence this is incorrect. Baidhyanath says that the person’s body is diseased but I think that even if there is a malefic influence in the Seventh House, this will not occur. How this can take place if Mercury is retrograde is not clear. Brihadyavanajaatak and Hillajaatak have made references to the person getting married at an early age. This may well have been true in earlier times when child marriages were the norm but these traits are impossible in this day and age. Similarly the benefit of travelling in a carriage should also be understood in context. In earlier times, only the gentry or the very learned could travel in a hand lifted carriage so this could be considered an attribute then. Kalyanavarma says the wife is from an ordinary family, this only serves to prove that there were inter-class marriages then too. Narayanabhatt and Jaageshwar have both said that the person is not brave but then I find it difficult to understand how the person can be beloved of women if he is not brave. Garg’s statements can be interpreted in two ways. The first, that the person’s wife has many children and secondly that her father has many children. All the astrologers have ascribed positive attributes to masculine signs and negative attributes to feminine signs.

My Experience: If Mercury is in a masculine sign the person’s wife is beautiful and good. Her face is authoritative and slightly elongated. Her hair is black, long, thick, lustrous but dry. Her physique is wiry and slightly masculine. Her voice is heavy. She is brave, educated, a debater, but not very respectful to her husband and can be quarrelsome. If Mercury is in a feminine sign, the wife’s face is round. Her hair is wavy, long and silky. She speaks sharply but her voice is melodious. She is respectful to her husband and loving to people. Even if she is more educated than her husband she treats him with respect. She is well behaved, attractive and worldly wise. If Mercury is in Gemini, Libra or Sagittarius the person is usually a teacher, a scholar, a school principal, a lawyer, a book seller, a publisher etc. In Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn, the person becomes a trader, a clerk or a typist. In Cancer, Scorpio, or Pisces, the person is a compounder or a clerk in a government office. In Aries or Virgo the person is fortunate and stable. He has to travel a lot.

Mercury in the Eighth House

Acharya and Gunakar: Vishurtugunakhyaattaha. He is famous because of his virtue.

Kalyanavarma: Vikhyaatanaamasaarashchiranjeevi kuladharo nidhanasansthe. Shashitanaye bhavati naro nripatisamo dandanaayako vaaspi. He is glorious, long lived, of a good lineage, as influential as a king or a general.

Baidhyanath: Vinatibaahulyagunaprasiddho dhani sudhrashmisutesshtamasthe. He is courteous, soft-spoken and revered for such habits. He is wealthy and famous.

Vasishtha: Sarve graham dinakarapramukhaa nitaantam mrityusthithaa vitanute kiladushtabuddhim. Shaastrabhighaatapaaripeeditagaatrayashti saukhyavairviheenamatirogagunairoopetam. Irrespective of which planet is in the Eighth House there is only one outcome: he is of evil temperament, diseased and devoid of happiness. If he ventures near the scriptures he suffers from body aches. This astrologer has also described one more benefit – meaningfully gained wealth.

Parashar: Mritau bandhuviheenatvamcha bandhanam. He has no friends. He has to undergo a prison sentence.

Garg: Karoti mrityum nidhasthito budhaha sukhena teerthe sukhade niraavile. Shoolaghrajanghodararogapeedaa paapaha pighaayaantakaro naraanaam. He dies as a place of pilgrimage and he dies peacefully. If Mercury is in an inauspicious influence, the person suffers from infection in his stomach or thigh.

Mars & Mercury: Mercury in Various Houses, Chapter XX, Part - 13

Continuation…

Dr. Shanker Adawal

Agyaath: Rajapujyaha vidhyaavighnaham. Daambhikaha. Trishadvarshe bahuraajasneho bhavati. Bahushrutahalekhakaha. Kunjarshe neelakushttaadirogi. Shanirahuketuyute vaatshulaadirogi. Gyaatishatrukalaha. Bhaavaadhipe balayate gyaatiprabalaha. Arineecharshe. Gyaatikshayaha. He is respected by the rulers, and an excellent writer. He excels in his education too. He becomes fast friends with the ruler. If Mercury is in a sign ruled by Mars then the person contracts diseases like leprosy. If Mercury is in conjunction with Saturn, Rahu or Ketu the person contracts infections. He fights with people of his clan. If the planet ruling the Sixth House is auspicious the person is born in a high caste. If the Lord of the Sixth House is base, the person’s clan is wiped out.

My Thoughts:

In this space, the good attributes of Mercury are seen in masculine signs and the bad traits in feminine signs. It is debatable whether the person’s maternal uncle can have only daughters. I have seen several horoscopes of people whose uncles have had sons. What Gholap says about long lasting ailments is apt for Mercury. It is not clear how Gopal Ratnakar says the person’s mother will die as the Sixth House is not an indicator of a person’s mother’ death and incidentally Mercury is not a planet that brings death. Hence I think this is incorrect. I suspect what he meant is that if Mercury is in the Sixth House and the Sun in the Seventh House, there may be some potential for the person’s mother to die. Hillajaatak’s confusion over age two or three or alternately 23 is misplaced. There is a possibility that the infant may get injured seriously by a carelessly left scissor or knife and in case of the youth he may die after getting injured in a fight. At the age of 30, the unknown astrologer says that he may make friends with the king but this cannot be ascribed as a benefit accruing solely from Mercury in the Sixth House.

My Experience: I have not seen many horoscopes where Mercury is in the Sixth House. If it is in a feminine sign then those who are writers suffer from mental ailments. While writing or speaking if the person is not cautious he can err. His writing is popular and is the subject of much delete. His eating habits are excellent till middle age. Then he develops digestive ailments and loses interest in food. He gets sudden success in important works.

Mercury in the Seventh House

Acharya and Gunakar: Dharmagyaha. He is knowledgeable about religion.

Kalyanavarma: Praagyaam suchaaruvesham naatikuleenaam cha kalahasheelaam cha. Bhaaryaamanekavitam dhute labhate mahatva, cha. His wife is intelligent, well-dressed, of an ordinary family but quarrelsome. He acquires wealth through many means and holds a high position.

Baidhyanath: Vyanga shilpakalaa vinodachaturastaaraasutesstangate. If Mercury is retrograde the person’s physique is powerful. He is courteous and a good sculptor.

Vasishtha: Budho bahuputrayuktaam roopanvitaam janamanohararoopasheelaam. Peedam. His wife is beautiful and artistic. She has many sons. He suffers from body aches.

Parashar: yudhe sati paraajayam. He is defeated in arguments and debates. He keeps the company of prostitutes.

Garg: Tarangabhaavagate harinaam bhavati chanchalamadhya narikshihivipulavanshabhava pramadaapatihi sa cha bhavati shubhage shashivanshaje. His eyes appear mischievous. His wife’s father has many children.

Aryagranthakar: His description is similar to Garg.

If Mercury is in a malefic influence or in a space ruled by a malefic planet the person renounces the world and becomes a mendicant. He is victorious over his enemies. If it is in a retrograde or malefic sign his enemies harass him constantly. His maternal uncle only has daughters, no sons.

Jayadeva: Vaadavit gunashaali. He excels in debate and is virtuous.

Narayanabhatt: Virodhi janaanaam ripunaam prabodhiyatinaam cha rodhosnilaanaam. Budhe sadvyaye vyavahaaro nidhinaam balaadharthakrit sambhavechchatrubhaave. This person opposes everyone he comes across. He is victorious over his enemies. He is knowledgeable enough to share learning with sages. He practices Yoga and Pranayam. He spends hi money on works that benefit the community in general and earns much wealth through hard work.

Jeevanath: Vaayunaam prabhavati vikaarospi jathare. Varaanaa. Ratnaanaam vyavhritti rativaartha janani. He suffers from gastric ailments. He prospers as a trader of gems. He opposes the king. If Mercury is in a low position or in a House ruled by a hostile planet the person ends up renouncing the world and becoming a mendicant. He defeats his enemies with ease. If Mercury is lowly positioned or retrograde or malefic the person’s enemies harass him.

Mantrehswara: It is the same as Jaageshwar.

Gholap: He serves fools. He has a rigid posture and is tormented by long lasting ailments. He is unhappy, poor, a sinner, debt-ridden, cruel and grief stricken. He is tormented by evil people and also by thieves.

Punjaraj: Shatrustho gyaha poonsaanaam noonam swapamrityum. He dies early and after a life-threatening incident.

Gopal Ratnakar: His mother dies. He is of an evil bent of mind.

Hillajaatak: Shastrasakaashaanmrittimarigye dwitrivatsare. He dies at the hands of his enemies at the age of two or three. This could also be interpreted as the age of 23.

Yavanmath: He is tired of the world, of a cruel nature and quarrels unnecessarily.

Paaschaatya Math: He is harangued by lazy servants, suffers from respiratory ailments and spondylitis. He has a weak chest and suffers from emotional problems. He dies of anxiety and tension. He does not prosper in self-employed ventures. He is a nuclear scientist or a writer. He has some interests in a printing press. If Mercury is in combination with a malefic influence of any kind, there is a possibility that the person may go mad and may commit suicide.

Mars & Mercury: Mercury in Various Houses, Chapter XX, Part - 11

Continuation…

Dr. Shanker Adawal

My Thoughts: Though Kalyanavarma and some others have referred to the person’s interest in the occult, I believe that this is a subject dealt with by Venus. What Mercury can do is bestow the power to dispel the influences of other planets. Just about every ancient astrologer has made some reference to a person’s ability to have children and this proves that it is incorrect to brand Mercury a gender-neutral planet. Some astrologers have made references to the person’s maternal uncle dying but this appears very bizarre as a person’s influence on his maternal uncle’s life is governed in the Sixth House from which the Fifth House is actually in the twelfth place. Moreover, it is absolutely incorrect to ascribe a property like death or destruction to a planet like Mercury, which is among the most auspicious and beneficial planets. Yavanmath’s reference to the mother’s death when the person is five years old and Hillajaatak’s contention that the person’s mother dies when he is 26 are proved incorrect by simple observation. In fact, the mother’s death is something that is not even considered when examining the influence of any planet in the Fifth House. The only circumstance in which this could occur is if the Sun is in the Fourth House when Mercury is in the Fifth House. The benefits ascribed by astrologers in this space are seen only in masculine signs while the negative traits are visible in feminine signs. The propensity of having daughters and no sons are usually seen when the planet is in Gemini or Libra.

My Experience: If Mercury is in the Fifth House in a masculine sign, the person has a melodious voice and a sharp intellect. He completes his education rapidly often as early as 20 to 23 years of age. The person can be a successful writer, poet, dramatist or essayist. He writes on science. In Gemini, Libra or Aquarius, the person has no children or only a few at the most. If he is a writer, he settles or viewing his works as his children. He is powerful in his community. He is soft spoken, charismatic and an introvert. If Mercury is in Aries, Leo or Sagittarius, the person has a bit of a temper and is stubborn. He is attracted towards law and justice matters. He is sober and community oriented. If Mercury is in Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn the person is of a crooked bent of mind. His education is incomplete and he is quarrelsome by nature. He can pick up an argument on imaginary issues. He is given to taunting people. He has few children and they are equally evil in nature. He is practical and tends to keep himself in the background pushing others ahead of himself in any work. If Mercury is in Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces the person has many children. The first three or five and the last is a son. He is not reliable or trustworthy. He dwells on other people’s shortcomings. If Mercury is in Aries, Leo or Sagittarius, the person excels in mathematics, law, metallurgical astrology, dance, phrenology etc. In Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn, the person does well in elemental sciences, study of the Evidence Act and in graphology. In Gemini, Libra and Aquarius, the person does well meteorology, medicine, community health, teaching his own mother tongue and in elemental sciences. He does well dealing with the Stamp Act, grammar and oral examinations. In Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces, the person does well in typing, fingerprint examination, macrology, and wordplay. Mercury in an exalted position is essential for a person to succeed in his career.

Mercury in the Sixth House

Acharya and Gunakar: Ashatruhu. He has no enemies.

Kalyanavarma: Vaadavivaade kalahe nityajito vyaadhitaha shashte budhe. Aalaso vinashtakopo nishtthuravaakyosti paribhootaha. He is constantly defeated in arguments and debate. He is always ill, lazy and free of anger. He speaks harshly and is always being humiliated by others.

Mars & Mercury: Mercury in Various Houses, Chapter XX, Part - 10

Continuation…

Dr. Shanker Adawal

Aryagranthakar: Tanayamandirage shashinandane sutakalatrayuktaha sukhabhaajanam. Vikachampakachachaarumukhaha sukhi suragurdwijabhaktiyuktaha shuchihi. His wife bears many sons. He is happy, has pure and noble thoughts, worships gods and sages alike. His face is beautiful like a lotus in full bloom.

Mantreshwara: The same as described by Baidhyanath.

Punjaraj: Gye samaa. Kanyapatyaha. He is of average intellect and has only daughters.

Suryajaatak: Shubhamatihi. His intellect is pure and uncorrupted.

Gholap: He is worshipped by all. He is pure, noble, good looking and has prestige. If Mercury is in Capricorn or Aquarius, the person will have daughters even if there is no malefic influence.

Gopal Ratnakar: The person’s maternal uncle dies soon. His father suffers but his mother prospers. He has several diseases and ailments. He is honoured by the king. He is interested in clothes and has an extensive wardrobe. He is learned, popular and extroverted.

Hillajaatak: Shadavimsho maatrihaa panchamo budhaha. At the age of 26 the person’s mother dies.

Jaatakaratna: Vidhyou vivaahato nnashtaha. The person dies as soon as his son gets married.

Agyaath: Saumye swakshetragate panchamaputra bhaagbhavati. Simhasthite pi chaivam navame vaa tritiyabhaaryaam. Himasuto garbhahaani karoti bhaavaadhipe paapayute balaheene putranaashaha. Aputraha dataputrapraatihi, paapakarmi. If Mercury is in its own house, the person has sons, even if Mercury is in Leo, in the Third House or in the Seventh House. If the planet ruling the Fifth House is weak or in combination with a malefic planet the person’s sons get destroyed and his wife if pregnant can miscarry the child. He ends up having to adopt a son because he cannot naturally beget any. He carries out many evil and cruel acts in his frustration over this.

Yavanmath: The person gets wealth and has children. He is brave, happy, and works hard. He gets prestige early in life and this remains with him consistently.

Paaschaatya Math (Western Thought): The person has children, glory and learning. He has a leaning towards gambling, lotteries, valour and peaceful activities. If Mercury is in a sign when that sun sigh is in its destructive phase then the person’s entire clan is destroyed. In Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces, the person’s entire clan is destroyed. In Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces, the person’s children go mad. If Mercury in this place is in conjunction with Saturn or Mars or both, then the possibility of children going mad is averted. If Jupiter or Saturn or both cast an auspicious influence over Mercury in this place, the person is lucky when gambling. If Mercury is benefited by an auspicious Moon, the person gets general benefits. However, this combine brings with it an argumentative nature.
