Yantras
play significant role in the meditative practices an described in our classics.
According to Sanskrit Dictionary Vachaspatyam “Yantram” is “an
instrument” or an instrument for holding or restraining which may be used to
denote a variety of linear diagrams. It is a geometric design acting as a
highly efficient tool for contemplation, concentration and meditation. Yantras
often focus on a specific deity and so by tuning into the different Yantras one
can interact with certain deities or creative force centres in the universe,
according to our classics.
Design of Yantras
Yantras may be of simple
designs symbolizing basic concepts such as cross, triangle, square, circle or
lotus. They may be of more complex combinations of such elements in figures
which represents abstract form, the particular creative forces in the cosmos,
which are called divinities. Yantras are usually designed so that the eye is
carried into the centre, and very often they are symmetrical. They can be
inscribed on paper, wood, metal, or earth, or they can be three-dimensional.
It is said that pious
spirits (Devas) reside in Yantras and
without performing Pooja of Yantra
neither one can appease them nor attain results from Yantras.
Effect
of Yantras
Operation of Yantra is
something called “shape energy” or “form energy”. The idea is that every shape
emits a vey specific frequeny and energy pattern. Certain `powers’ are ascribed
to the various shapes. Some have `evil’ or negative energies and some have
`good’ or positive energies, but in Yantras only the benefic and harmonious
energies are used.
Basically Yantras are
secret keys for establishing resonance with the benefic energies of the
macrocosm. Very often Yantras can put us in contact with extremely elevated
energies and entities, being of invaluable help on the spiritual path system,
reflecting on a large scale one of its component systems or parts.
Types
of Yantras
There are five types of
yantra which are know as Bhu Prisht Yantra, Meru Prastar Yantra, Paatal Yantra,
Meru Prastar Yantra and Ruram Prisht Yantra.
The above five types of
Yantras are classified according to the different types of pooja (worship)
conducted by the aspirations. Each has a separate and distinct purpose to gain
a particular objective for the aspirant. Some Yantras are worshipped in
temples, some are worshipped by individuals at home and some are worn on the
body (usually of triangular or rectangular shape) either around the neck, the
arm, or kept close to the body in another location.
Classification
of Yantras
Yantras are classified
according to their usage. They are known as Sharir Yantras, Dhaaran Yantra,
Aasan Yantra, Mandla Yantra, Pooja Yantra, Chatar Yantra, Darshan Yantra.
Composition
of Yantras
It is best known that the Vedas described this Universe a
composition of five elements which are known as Earth, Air, Fire, Water and
Sky. In the Yantras where lines are used with the basic concept of Bindu or point, all these elements are
used particularly earth, water and fire.
