Planets and Work in Vedic Astrology Part 1

Dr. Shanker Adawal

Part 1

The term “vocation” is often used by astrologers to include profession, occupation, etc. However, there are some fine differences to be noted.

If one is a lawyer, he has a profession. If he is a farmer, he has an occupation. If he is a farmer, he has an occupation. If he is a preacher or a monk, he has a vocation. If he makes cushions for sale in his spare time, in addition to his regular work, he has an avocation. A “job” is usually of a clerical or manual character and often temporary. A “career” is a particular type of work pursued assiduously over the years, may be a profession or occupation, and is considered as one’s life work.

During the middle ages, by the 12th century, four classes were recognized: (1) Clergy, (2) Soldiers-Hereditary nobles who felt it was their business to fight and govern, (3) Townsmen-Those engaged in trade and industry, and (4) Peasants-Serfs and others. Thus e see a resemblance to the four Hindu castes: (1) Kshtriyas-Soldiers, executives, leaders, administrative and civic officers, (3) Vaisyas-merchants, ranchmen, gentlemen farmers, skilled workers, and (4) Sudras-small farmers, barbers, slaves and servants.

In early America, there were only three professions-law, theology and medicine. Today we have engineering, advertising, pharmacy, and many others. In this age of specialization, one is seldom simply a lawyer: he is a patent lawyer, criminal lawyer, civil lawyer, anti-trust lawyer, etc.

The Industrial Revolution, which began in England in the 18th century and spread to America and elsewhere, marked the transition from hand labour to machine production. The factory system, with its piecework and different types of jobs, was inaugurated. Today there are hundreds of job titles-key punch operator, garbage collector, chacker, photographer, lathe operator, dishwasher, interior decorator, dietitian, chauffeur, statistician, labour organizer, valet, clothes model, dog groom systems analyst, public relations consultant, charwoman etc.

Some persons have several different kinds of jobs in a lifetime. Some hold two jobs-as, working in an office or factory during the day and driving a taxicab at night, some inherit wealth and never work, and princes may become kings.

Whether we will always have the clergy, the soldiers, merchants, factory workers and small farmers remains to be seen. We are told that in the computerize world of tomorrow, job titles will change drastically. Manual labourers, stenographers and many others will not be needed. The ability to understand and use complex mathematical data, will be as important as the ability to read and write. Prominent professions will include: computer, technologist, ecologist, oceanographer, sociologist, gynecologist, nuclear physicist, and town planner. With little to do, people may require more entertainment, and so we may need more actors, musicians, lecturers, comedians and clowns to relieve the monotony.

The psychologists have their aptitude tests, but they are not very reliable. As Dr. Robert E. Rottenberg says in one of his books, without an understanding of the personality and a sure knowledge of the intelligence, aptitude tests cannot tell one what career to follow.

Strange as it may seem to those who have never studied astrology, the planets rule over different professions, occupations, etc. the Sun rules over politics, power and authority, and bankers; the Moon over public relations and advertising, taverns, sailors, water and dairy products; Mercury over stenographers, train conductors, airplane stewardesses, and astrologers (together with Uranus); Venus over the arts, hotels and motels; Mars over soldiers, iron and steel workers, brothels, mathematicians; Jupiter over the clergy, judges, and philanthropy; Saturn over farmers, democratic statesmen, servants, and undertakers (together with Pluto); Rahu over druggists (together with Neptune); and Ketu over psychic mediums and spiritualists preachers (together with Neptune).

The 10th house of Karma is supposed to represent one’s profession of occupation or vocation. It is also said that the lord of the sign owning the Navamsa occupied by the lord of the 10th house, gives a clue to one’s profession or life work, but again this cannot be wholly relief upon. The writer believes that the strongest planet in a Kendra from the Ascendant, Moon or Sun must first be considered. Planets in the 10th or aspecting the 10th are very important. And the position of the 2nd and 11th lords (money and gains) gives the final clue, since one’s income is invariably tied to one’s work.

Planets and Foreign Travels Part 4

Dr. Shanker Adawal

Part 4

The  Ascendant is occupied by the Sun, the Moon and Mercury- lords of the 9th to the 12th and aspected by Jupiter retrograde in Rasi and exalted in Navamsa. Lord of the Ascendant, Venus, is in the 3rd in Jupiter’s house in Moola ruled by Kethu who resides with Saturn in the 2nd from the Ascendant and 12th from Venus.

His birth data is 12-11-1928 at 5 a.m. Lat. 31degree38’N and Long. 74degree52’E.

Example (2) – Natal Chart

Balance of Jupiter Dasa at birth: 14 years, 7 months and 13 days.

Note: In Bhava, the Sun and the Moon are in the 2nd and Saturn in the 3rd.

Saturn in the 3rd Bhava with Venus with Jupiter’s aspect may be considered generally a balancing feature of the horoscope although the martian aspect sometimes tends to tilt the balance. At the time of the question, the native was running Mercury Dasa Venus Bhukti. Mercury is lord of the 9th and the 12th ideally suited for foreign voyage, and is placed in the Ascendant (movable, conjoined with the Moon, lord of the 10th, and the Sun, lord of the 11th, and free from combustion. Lord of the Ascendant associated with Saturn, the Yogakaraka, in Sagittarius. Lord of the 12th from Sagittarius is Mars who is the enemy of Venus and who is approaching his depression sign Cancer, and in Rahu’s star without strength. These roughly indicate that there are chances for foreign travel for the native. Mercury Dasa appeared quite appropriate for the travel on the basis of its own qualifications but there was considerable difficulty in fixing the sub lord. Venus, as sub lord, does not lack the potential. Even though foreign travel was not even contemplated in the least by querist, my own inquisitiveness prompted me to probe this aspect further. Hence, as usual, the horoscope for the time of the query was cast as given hereunder in the data, 7th February 1968, 11.35 a.m., New Delhi.

Lagna is movable with its lord Mars in the 12th with retrograde Mercury aspected by retrograde Jupiter. The 12th house is tenanted by a malefic. Lagna is also aspected by its lord Mars, Mercury, the Sun and Venus (according to the aspects recognized in horary astrology) and by Jupiter powerfully.

Example (2) – Horary Chart

Similarly, the exalted Moon is aspected by Jupiter, the Sun, Mercury and Saturn. Of course not all these aspects are applying ones. Essentially the aspect between lord of the Ascendant Mars and that of the 7th Venus, is an applying one with an orb of 8 ½ degrees. This is a satisfactory one. As far as the question put by the person was concerned, a fairly satisfactory time was ahead professionally although not very promising in the immediate future. I tried to analyse the indications for a probable foreign visit obtaining in the natal chart, through the horary chart and found good supporting evidence in it. On the basis of the positive evidence, viz., 8 ½ degrees of applying aspect and others outlined above and the indications in the birth chart, I ventured a prediction of foreign trip to the native in about 8 ½ months from the date of query or roughly by the latter half of November 1968. He did not agree with this prediction as no such thing appeared to him possible in the then prevailing circumstances. But later events duly developed and his trip actually materialized in the middle of December 1968 when transit Jupiter exactly transited the natal Jupiter. This occurred in the Sun’s sub-period of Mercury Dasa and it is not possible for me to explain from birth chart alone how the Sun was able to fill up the role excepting perhaps that he is the karaka for profession and is located in a movable sign.

The above example of horary chart alone clinching the issue should not make us conclude that such solutions can always be found by working out horary charts only.

Primary dependence on the birth horoscope should be deemed very essential and the supporting evidence, timing etc., should be sought from horary and other methods including sidereal solar progression. In other words, broad tendencies of foreign travels may be advanced fairly well with the help of a three-pronged drive, (i) birth horoscope and directional methods; (ii) horary chart to supplement the indication in the natal chart; and (iii) transits and their influence.

Planets and Foreign Travels Part 3

Dr. Shanker Adawal

Part 3

In this chart, the lord of the Ascendant is in the Ascendant itself which is a fixed sign and the 9th is a movable sign whose lord is in Libra, another movable sign. But the cusp of the 9th is in a fixed sign (9s 24degree 5’). Also the lord of the 9th aspected by Mars, lord of the 12th, is in the constellation of Jupiter who is himself tenanting the 10th house. Lord of the 10th, Saturn is in the 6th, a movable sign and in the last Navamsa possessing very limited exaltation strength. Nevertheless, retrograde Jupiter’s limited aspect on Saturn, who is the lord of the 9th and the 10th really makes him Raja Yogakaraka, of course, with certain inherent limitations. Mars, lord of the 12th, is in the 11th in Jupiter’s house and is in the constellation of Mercury who is in turn in Saturn’s star. These are pointers towards foreign trip, the significators being Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Accordingly, I fixed Jupiter Dasa Mars Bhukti for the foreign visit to the native who had commenced Jupiter’s Dasa in November 1956. His Mars’ sub period started in July 1969 which looked propitious for his trip. However, to get some further insight into the matter I thought of the time of query also.

The horary chart worked out for the query time for the above subject was as follows:-

Four planets Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury and Mars are Vargottama. The 9th is a movable sign occupied by the lord of the 7th. The 9th lord, Mars, is in a movable sign, Cancer, with an array of combinations. The 12th house, by itself a movable one, accommodates four planets of which the chief is its lord, the Moon, then the Sun, lord of the Ascendant, next Mars, lord of the 4th and the 9th, and lastly Venus, lord of the 3rd and the 10th. The Lagna lord is in conjunction with the lords of three movable signs, the 3rd, the 9th and the 12th – a real portender for a trip abroad. But there are no applying aspects between the Sun and Saturn (lords of the 1st and the 7th), the Sun and Mars (lords of the 1st and the 9th), the Sun and the Moon (lords of the 1st and the 12th) and the Sun and Venus (lords of the 1st and the 10th). This did not portray the occurrence of the event in the near future. My conclusion which was conveyed to the person was that there was no chance of an immediate trip abroad for the next 10 or 12 months that in any case not earlier than the beginning of Mars Bhukti of Jupiter Dasa by July 1969. The foreign trip for the native actually materialized around June 1969. The error of one month may probably be on account of the slight differences in the Dasa Bhukti calculations and also unrectified birth time. In any case the study of the birth horoscope (even with the unrectified birth time) coupled with the horary chart gave some help in deciphering the broad tendencies.

Example (2): In another case, a Government officer who had not received much encouragement professionally, befitting his qualifications and long years of service and consequently very much disgruntled and dissatisfied with his lot, approached me with the question, “What is in stock for me professionally?”

Planets and Foreign Travels Part 2

Dr. Shanker Adawal

Part 2

(7) The planet in the 12th house owning a movable sign also occupying a movable sign, or as lord of a Dusthana or aspected by Saturn.

(8) Exchange between friendly lords of the 9th and 12th house preferably in movable signs.

(9) Dasa or Bhukti of the 9th, the 10th or the 12th lord from Ascendant, the Moon or the Sun (in a movable sign) associated with a yoga karaka, usually propitious for bringing about foreign travel.

(10) Dasa of lord of the 12th or that of the planet placed in the 12th or that aspecting the 12th.

(11) Fixing the time is a rather ticklish affairs which every student of astrology will vouch. The timing can be sometimes made with reference to the transit of Jupiter or his Trinal aspect over the M. C., the Sun or the lord of the 9th in a movable sign.

(12) When Jupiter makes a Trinal aspect on the lord of the 7th from a movable sign or double bodied sign or when the 7th lord himself is in a movable or doubled bodied sign and Jupiter makes a Trinal aspect on him, then the person will have a long journey or travel abroad.

(13) Lord of the 9th in Ascendant and vice versa or exchange between lords of the Ascendant and the 9th makes the person live in foreign lands.

(14) When a planet is in his depression or inimical house and is also retrograde the native will live in a foreign land serving some one.

(15) Lord of the Lagna in the 12th, a malefic planet in the 10th and combined with Mars makes the native live in a foreign country and lead a miserable life.

(16) When three or more planets other than the luminaries occupy both the 2nd and the 12th from the Ascendant, then the native will live in a foreign country.

(17) If the Ascendant is movable and lord of the Ascendant also in a movable sign aspected by a planet from a movable sign, then the native will make his fortune in a foreign place.

(18) There is no specific karaka or significator for foreign travels given in the texts although the Moon and Mars are termed for the purpose generally. Rahu and Kethu are no less important for signifying foreign travels unless they are well associated with a Yogakaraka planet and placed in a movable, the 9th or 12th house from the Ascendant or the Moon.

(19) Kethu in the above situation would give mediocre effects in the beginning of his Dasa and during the last phase of the Dasa provide for a foreign visit.

(20) Other planets and Bhavas also acquire powers to bring about the event through such qualifications as prescribed earlier in their respective Dasa Bhukti and or transit of such planet or planets over the cusp of the 9th house, the M. C., the natal Sun, the Moon and lord of the Ascendant.

(21) From Lagna as well as the 10th house prediction in a very general way can be made, and the return from travel from the 7th house. From the entry of a planet into the 4th house, the time of return of a traveler may also be ascertained.

(22) If the Ascendant is movable and if its lord occupies or aspects the Ascendant without the aspect of malefic, and if benefics associate with or aspect the Ascendant, the person will have a change of place. If malefic associate with or aspect the Ascendant, there will be no change.

(23) In the case of a query regarding someone who had already gone abroad, if the Ascendant at query be fixed or common, and if it associates with benefics or is aspected or occupied by benefics, the person who went abroad would have come back. If on the other hand malefic associate with or aspect or occupy the Ascendant, the person has not returned from abroad.
In the following practical examples only a few of the above principles relevant to the cases have been applied which readers may kindly note.

Example (1): A query about the probable time of foreign visit was put at by a friend who was in the administrative service and whose name had been earlier recommended for training abroad. At the time of the query he was expecting to leave the country in about two to three months according to the progress of his assignment. His natal horoscope is as under:

Example (1) – Natal Chart

Date of Birth 6-7-1926 at 4-30 a.m. Lat. 12degree20’N, Long. 76degree39’E.

Balance of the Moon’s Dasa at birth: 5 years, 4 months and 2 days.

Planets and Foreign Travels Part 1

Dr. Shanker Adawal

Part 1

Classical astrological literature provides a fund of information to indicate travels, short and long, earning livelihood in a foreign land, frequent journeys and so on. But hte combinations and Yogas given are far too many to pinpoint the occurrence of the event. For example, Jataka Parijata lays down that if the Ascendant is movable and its lord is in movable sign aspected by planets from movable signs the native of the chart has to go to a foreign land to earn his livelihood. Such a combination is very frequently seen but without the corresponding effect. Which are the cases where the above rule is to be applied, and where exactly should we clinch – these are real posers to students of astrology. Living in a foreign land is probably not guided merely by ascendant, its lord, and aspects on Ascendant lord. If one tabulates the position of houses and planets responsible for foreign travels and living abroad he will find that practically all the nine planets have powers to contribute in one way or the other as they will be found to have something to do with either the 1st or the 12th or the 9th or the 7th or the 4th or the 10th or their lords that are concerned with the question or the three airy or three watery signs and also the four movable signs. Do we become wiser after such a conglomeration of all available planets, houses, etc.? Does an analysis on the basis of the several-fold principles enunciated by old seers really help us to synthesis and cull out the prediction regarding foreign travel from among the scores of probabilities?

However, in spite of such severe limitations there is a silver lining. On a few occasions when confronted with the query about foreign travels. I took care to work out the horary chart for the time of query besides studying the natal chart and found that in a majority of cases the horary chart gave correct supplementary indications when suitably supported by the birth chart. Neither the natal chart nor the horary chart could exclusively be taken as final for purposes of prognostication in all the cases that I examined. Although in some, the horary charts alone gave the verdict, it again cannot be considered as the final say in the matter.

I, therefore, wish to place before the readers my limited analysis in a few out of many cases worked out by me, more for discussions rather than as a piece of analytical judgement. To venture into dynamic problems of this nature rather induces a tendency to vertigo. Since there may be others in like cases, I feel it is worth the attempt to clear up some very simple problems in the hope that combined efforts may be more helpful. I shall also endeavour to keep my mind free so as to give up any hypothesis, however, much beloved, once facts are shown to be opposed to it.

There are innumerable combinations and Yogas given in the texts indicating foreign travels, living in foreign land, etc. My first attempt here is to bring out some of the broad factors and more important underlying principles signifying foreign travels, and to apply them to a few practical cases of natal and horary charts. The usual rules governing horary astrology have also been applied where necessary.

(1) The 9th house (and not necessarily the 9th sign) should be preferably in a movable sign and movable Navamsa and should possess adequate strength.

(2) Rahu or Kethu or any malefic the 12th from the lord of the Ascendant.

(3) The lord of the 12th house from that occupied by the lord of the Ascendant as the latter’s enemy or in depression or weak.

(4) Malefic in the 12th house aspected by other malefic and the lord of the 12th is himself with a malefic.

(5) A benefic in the 12th house aspected by another benefic and the 12th lord in a benefic sign.

(6) The 12th house occupied by a malefic and the 12th lord conjoined with as well as aspected by a malefic.

On Foreign Travel with Planets

Dr. Shanker Adawal

In fact, controversial statement are given by eminent astrologers while predicting on Foreign matter which may not be accepted at any cost. During my discussion among the personalities on Foreign journey, many persons did not emphasize on the prediction as right that moment they did not find any scope to get an opportunity to proceed abroad. On and from the pioneer stage of astrological culture in the year 1967 my prediction on Foreign tour about my native become confirmed and they proceeded afterwards. Just after citing multifarious points of clues of foreign tour I shall append the `horoscope of few personalities who proceeded abroad for different purposes. No doubt question may not arise about journey towards western countries if there is no solvency in financial capacity. My curiosity developed while predicting a native’s chart who had accurate birth time who comes of a poor family of middle class from a remote village of West Bengal, whom I boldly foretold to be sure about his tour on certain date on the basis of the system.

Before going on details of Rashi Chart, I like to enlighten the chief formula how to proceed abroad. It will be a matter of exaggeration if I say that trinal houses and particularly from 240 degree to 360 degree is vital in case of foreign tour. In Indian Astrology, in course of discussion with respected Pundits and reputed astrologers, I have noticed that emphasis was given on 333 degree to 360 degree from the Ascendant, according to Western astrology and compilation method, i.e. Stellar availed by the planet along with the Vimsottari Dasa/sub/minor interim. Krishnamurti enlightened all the points as mentioned above and stipulated that cuspal position, mid points, sub sub points of ninth house and benevolent relation of sub sub planet of Ascendant with the ninth house lord of planets whenever they are posited which is really or scientific procedure who thought in depth.

Forecasting on foreign matter may be enlightened according to 12 Ascendants. For Aries/Mesha Ascendant Jupiter, for Taurus/Vrishava, Saturn for Gemini/Mithuna Saturn, Venus for Cancer/Karkata, Jupiter/Mercury for Leo/Simha Mars/Moon, for Virgo/Kanya, Venus/Sun for Libra/Tula, Mercury/for Scorpio/Vrischika Moon;/Venus for Sagittarius/Dhanu, Sun/Mars for Capricorn/Makara on Mercury/Jupiter, for Venus/Saturn and for Pisces/Meena Ascendant Mars/Saturn’s role are to be verified for finalization of prediction.

Dragon’s head/Saturn/Jupiter are the major karaka of foreign tour. Krishnamurti pointed out to confirm the relevant matter of foreign issue on the basis of chief significator (sub-sub of ninth cusp and planet’s sub-sub) Ascendant sub-sub curp along with 3rd/12 houses sub sub cusp and the sub sub cusp of the planets posited therein together with the assurance of eleventh house which gives clue fulfillment of success of the matter to the native. If these houses do not agree to provide promise for foreign tour, prediction may be given in negative without hesitation as sometimes persons intended to know about the matter that most of the procedure were followed to go abroad which confuses the astrologers as they become biased on listening the light assurance from them without knowing planetary positions in the Zodiac.

In spite of these points planets of trine and quadrant are to be Yogakaraka or positive for assurance of foreign matter from the stand point of Ascedant. Neechabhanga, Raja Yoga/karaka planet also becomes helpful for the native for finalization of proceedings towards abroad.

I have noticed in few rasi charts that location of moon along with Saturn in sixth house from Ascendant will insist the native to reside abroad. Location of moon/Saturn or Sat/Mars or Rahu Mars in ninth will give trouble to the native while in journey even during staying foreign. For example, and ready reference, following cases are appended below who awaited the chance to move westward for different purpose. An officer of Indian Army had been in Nigeria (Africa) while he had the Dasa of ninth in sub of 12/sub-sub period of Asc., whose birth sign is Ascendant falls in Scorpio.

Next belongs to the research scholar in bio-chemistry who proceeded on 18th May 1979 for USA for post doctoral research after obtaining M.Sc. Ph.D from the University of Calcutta during the main period Moon/and Major importance is to be given on ninth house from the ascendant. Confirmation is assured by Guruji as he cited the house cuspal, planetary position and lordship of the particular house together with its location from the stand point of malefic and benevolent. Similarly it was marked while every astrological propounders of different schools of Astrology assimilated on the view point that movable planets play an important role while forecasting on foreign issue. It is a matter of observation where the planet of ninth house is posited. If it is located in any house which is having in connection with the traveling matter chance may be assured if the planet is beneficial for the particular ascendant.

Know About Overseas Part 2

Dr. Shanker Adawal

Part 2

Therefore, Saturn, Kethu and Venus are auspicious to go on a long journey. Hence Saturn Dasa Kethu Bhukti Venus Anthara is between 2-6-64 and 3-9-64. As Kethu is the strongest, the shookshma should be that of Kethu which operated on 2-9-64 and 3-9-64. The editor predicted that he will go overseas on 2-9-64, when Sun transits in Venus star and when Sun conjoins in Venus star and when Sun conjoins both Mercury and Uranus in that constellation. (Mercury and Uranus are for sudden journeys).
The next horoscope belongs to one person, who need not go overseas, as he need not qualify himself by further studies or contact any one to expand his business. But, without any expectation and expenses, the native had made overseas journey as predicted years ago. The Chart is as follows:-

Born on 11-7-1920 at 11-10 A.M., the balance of Venus Dasa is 7 years and 3 months. Consider 9th and 12th houses for overseas. 9 is vacant. It is owned by Venus. Rahu occupies Venus sign – Rahu is stronger than Venus. Rahu has to give the results of Mars also as it is conjoined with it. Rahu was in its own constellation. 12th house is occupied by Saturn. It is in the constellation of lord of 9, Venus as it is in Poorvapalguni star.

Sun is lord of 12; it is conjoined with Venus. Hence Rahu, in Venus’s sign, Saturn, Venus and Sun are the significators. So Rahu Dasa Venus Bhukti Saturn Anthara was found to be the period. Rahu Dasa Venus Bhukti commenced on 29-4-64; Saturn’s sub sub was between 2-4-64 and 23-9-64: again in this period Venus Shookshma operated between 3-6-64 and 1-7-64. Actually he left Madras on 28.6.64 to Delhi and the left Delhi and reached America.

Why should he go to Delhi and break his journey? Because Venus was in the constellation of Jupiter who owns the 7th house which signifies this break.

Overseas Travel

The house to be judged are 3, 9 and 12. As he expects to go on duty, include the 10th house also.

The significators are to be found out in the following manner:-

(1) Planets including nodes deposited in the constellation of the occupants of houses 3, 9 and 12;

(2) Occupants of these houses;

(3) Planets including nodes situated in the constellation of the lords ruling houses 3, 9 and 12;

(4) Lord of these houses; and

(5) Planets conjoined with or aspected by any of the significators.

Always be careful: when and there verify and proceed.

Whenever nodes occupy either of the sign a planet which is the lord of the sign where the nodes are posited, or in the constellation of a planet or node take this node as stronger:

(Why is the third house to be judged? Because one has to leave his permanent place of residence.)
The permanent place of residence is denoted by the 4th house. 12th to the 4th shows removal from the permanent residence. Therefore, you have to consider the 3rd house. Whatever matters are governed by a certain house, will be negated by the house which is in 12 to it (12th shows Zyaya).

Why 9th house? Long journey is indicated by the 9th house. The third house includes short journeys. The 7th house shows breaks in journey. Many a third and many a seventh contribute to 9th also.

12th house – Why? When one goes overseas he stays in a foreign place: He will live in entirely new surroundings and new environments.

10th house – Why? Because one goes on duty and 10th shows one’s profession. If one goes to bet in the races, take 5th house. If one goes to marry a girl or boy, take 7th house. If one goes to deliver lecture, take 2nd house: and so on. If one is to break journey on the way, take 7th house.
