Sahams & Specific
Events
1.
Introduction
Sahams are special
features of Tajika Shastra. Sahams are important events of life. While a Brava
or house stands for a number of events, the Saham stands for a particular/
specific event of life. The Sahams are sensitive points arrived at by a certain
manipulation of longitudes of various planets and mid-point of certain houses.
Different though, specific manipulations yield different Sahams. Each Saham
then holds sway over a specific event of a life during the period of
approximately a year. Normally a native is curious to know about queries which
are time specific as to when an event is likely to materialize. In such cases,
the technique of Sahams could be applied in progressed annual chart or a horary
chart with astonishing accuracy. According to Harrison, “The function of any
sensitive point is to show the effect upon a certain specified department of
life, or the combined influence of any two planets depends upon the distance
between them, whether in aspect or not. It must be related to some position in
the horoscope in order that it may have point of operation.” However the
results of Sahams can fructify only if it is indicated in the birth as well as
annual/ horary charts. Thus such varied events as education, marriage, child
birth, fame, travel, rise & fall in status, illness, death and the like are
each ruled by a specific Saham.
2.
The number of Sahams recommended for application varies from one astrologer to
another. Whereas Acharya Keshava mentions of only 25 Sahams, Venkatesha
describes 48 Sahams, and Acharya Neelkantha describes 50 Sahams. It is
generally not necessary to calculate all the Sahams described in the texts, in
a given annual/ horary chart. The practitioners of Tajika system pick up only
the relevant Sahams pertaining to a particular year of life/ horary chart of a
native and analyze them. Although the tradition of calculating Sahams in a
birth chart is not in vogue, it is well documented in Kashi Viswa Panchang.
3.
Essential Parameters
Sahams are calculated
either for the day or for the Night depending upon the time of birth of Varshapravesh (Solar return) or the time
of query in Horary astrology. Calculation procedure for day and night Sahams
are different. For calculation of Sahams, longitudes of planets & Lagna,
cusp of houses and Time of Varshpravesh
or of query (in Horary) are essential. For finding out any Saham, three
parameters are involved. Any Saham can be represented by the formula: a- b + c.
If `c’ falls between `b’ and `a’, the value obtained by the formula `a – b + c’
represents the specified Saham. However, if `c’ does not fall between `b’ and
`a’, then add one sign or 30 degrees to the formula to get the desired Saham
i.e. the new formula will be a – b + c + 30. This process is known as “Saiktha
Samskaram”. However on this step there has been controversy among the old
Tajika astrologers. Keshava, Hari Bhatta and Ganesha were against this
Samskara. They advocated that this correction is unnecessary as it will not
have undisturbed progression. Another argument is that Sahams are formed by the
difference in longitudes of the significator and the promoter to the Lagna.
Hence the lagna needs rectification. Therefore
there is still a need to do further researchers in these two aspects.
