Tri-Pataki Chakra

1. Introduction

Tri-Pataki (three flag) Chakra is a special but virgin feature of Tajika Shastra. It is constructed to see the Vedha of Moon and Lagna with respect to other planets in the annual horoscope. The application and analysis of the Tri-Pataki Chakra shows type of Vedha on Moon and lagna and gives a general overview of the nature of events likely to dominate a particular year. While Vedha to any planet can be determined by this chakra, it is customary to consider various planetary influences / Vedha on Moon and the lagna only. This Chakra consists of a special charting of various planets as located in the birth chart with reference to the lagna of the annual chart. The planets are progressed by approximately one sign every year starting from their position at birth. The Tri-Pataki Chakra is, therefore, dependent on the planetary disposition of the birth chart.

2. Construction of Tri-Pataki Chakra

Three parallel lines are drawn vertically. Across these lines, are drawn three parallel lines horizontally. The ends of these lines are joined as shown in diagram below. On top of three vertical lines, customarily small flags (Pataka) are drawn, which has given it the name of Tri-Pataki. The central flag represents the sign of lagna of the annual chart. The sign rising at the time of Varshpravesh is marked here. The remaining signs are marked in an anti-clock wise fashion with the last sign (of 12th house of annual chart) marked on right most flag. This forms the skeleton on which the progressed planets are marked.

3. Locating the Planets

This process has been grouped into three categories as under:

1. For Moon: For locating location of Moon, divide the current year (completed year +1) by nine, forget the quotient and take the remainder figure, e.g. if the current year is 58 (i.e. 57 + 1); divide 58 by 9, it will give the remainder as 4. This means the Moon should be located in the sign 4th from its natal position. Note if remainder is zero, take figure of 9 and locate Moon in a sign 9th from its natal position.

2. For Sun, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus & Saturn: For locating any of these five planets, divide the current year by four and note if the remainder is zero, it has to be taken as 4. In case of 48th year, dividing by 4, gives a remainder of 2. So all these planets are to be located in the sign 2nd from their respective natal positions.

3. For Mars, Rahu & Ketu: For locating any of these planets, divide the current year by six, divide the current year by 6 and note the remainder or figure of 6, if there is no remainder. Again if the current year is 58, the remainder is 2, So these planets are to be located in the sign 2nd from their respective natal positions. However since Rahu & Ketu always move in retrograde manner, for their location also, one should count in opposite (Clock-wise) direction.

Note: Tajika Neelkanthi has put Mars in the second category along with five other planets for the purpose of its location. Some Tajika astrologers have suggested just two categories, merging the second & third into one only. However majority of Tajika astrologers have recommended three tier category as mentioned above and to our experience, it gives the best results.
