Salient Features

Part 1

1. Introduction
There are different kinds of systems of prediction like Numerology, Palmistry, Astrology etc. Each system has its own rules for giving predictions. Every system has its own advantages and its own limitations. Among all the systems, Indian system of prediction is accurate and sophisticated because of its deep analysis methods.

The Varshphal or annual horoscopy as it is called, is one of the numbers of technique of Vedic astrology employed to decipher the occurrence of future events. While the Parashari system, which is more prevalent, is much more ancient, the Varshaphala in its present form is of relatively more recent origin. It is sometimes called progressed horoscope also. The Varshphal or annual horoscope for any native is defined as the horoscope cast for a particular year at the moment when Sun attains the identical degree of longitude which it had at the time of native’s birth. Thus it is a solar based horoscope. The annual horoscopy was originated in the king’s court or Durbar, as an off shoot of the Parashari system to provide spontaneous and quick answers to the usual problems of the kings, like enemies, conquests, prosperity, health and succession etc. As the kingship gradually waned, it eventually shrank into the family tradition.

The methodology for casting a Varshphal though makes a defeinite departure, but the houses (Bhavas), signs and planets are having the same significations as they have in the Parashari system. The chart is constructed and the special principles of Varshaphala employed to forecast events. The annual horoscopy differs from the rest in the fact that it picks up one particular year of a native’s life and examines it in more minute details. Varshaphala is thus capable of providing a magnified view of one particular year of a native’s life, from one birthday to the next. The usual horoscope is generally cast for the time of birth of a native. Varshaphala is thus capable of providing a magnified view of one particular year of a native’s life, from one birthday to the next. The usual horoscope is generally cast for the time of birth of a native. The Varshaphala, however, is solar-based. In other words, it is the position of the Sun that is of significance here. The solar year for a native begins every time the Sun returns to the same longitude as it bad at the time of the native’s birth. Between this time and the next solar return is the period covered by one annual chart or the Varsha-Kundali. The time of solar return is technically called Varshapravesha, which literally means entry of the year. A Varsha-Kundali is a chart constructed for the Varshapravesha determined for a particular ear of life. Such an annual chart is meant to be constructed for every year, and examined in details in order to derive maximum benefit from astrological foresight.

The significance of Varshphal lies in the fact that it minutely examines the dynamic configuration of planets in a particular year with a view to see whether the events promised in the birth chart are going to materialize during the year as per dasha system. The old Vedic knowledge as contained in classics was complete in themselves to answer yearly predictions as per dasha, Bhukti and Antra system of Parashar. However on the basis of Birth chart, it is difficult to be precise about the occurrence of an event because the planets govern comparatively long periods of life and the events occur in the dasha (periods) of the concerning planets. A long and tedious mathematical procedure is required to be precise. If there is even a minute error in recording the exact birth time of the native, it gets magnified as we move to Sookshma dashas resulting in erroneous predictions. Hence the system of annual charts was evolved. The Prashna or Horary is closely relawted to annual charts as it appears to have a similar origin and utility. As it stands today, both annual charts and Prashna system base their predictions to a large extent as per Tajika Shastra. The Tajika system is well integrated by Vedic astrologers, while dealing with Varshphal, despite its being western originated. The salient points of Tajika system have been explained in the previous chapter.
