Maasa Phal or Monthly
Chart
1.
Introduction
In annual horoscopy, as
brought out earlier, we pick up one particular year of life of a native and
examine it more minute details. An annual chart is thus capable of providing a
magnified view of one particular year of a native’s life, from one birth day to
the next. Taking the same principle of going into more minute details, each month
of a particular year may be subjected to astrological scrutiny for a more clear
view of events and their closest timing possible. An annual or monthly chart is
basically a transit chart, showing transit of various planets at the moment of
solar return each year or each month. The main features of these charts is that
they hold true for a particular year or month. Thus the underline principles
for construction and delineation of the two charts are similar with monthly
chart slightly more assertive and nearer the likely events. In either case, an
event, which is not promised in the birth chart, is not likely to materialize
whether or not the annual and/ or monthly chart indicates it.
2.
Solar Return
The basis of Monthly
Chart, like in case of annual chart, is the longitude of Sun at the time of
birth. When Sun approaches same sign, degree, minute & second of longitude,
as at the time of birth, the moment is called the Varsha-Pravesh or beginning of the new year for the native. In one
year, Sun traverses 12 signs of the zodiac, staying in one sign for
approximately one month. In vedic astrology, great importance has been given to
Sun by all astrological savants. The Sudarshan
Chakra method, advocates to consider lagna, Sun & Moon, as vital tripod
of equal importance while analysing a chart. Significant variation to Sun’s
position is supposed to indicate significant changes in the life of a native.
Therefore great importance has been given to Samkranti (crossing over) of Sun to new sign in natal as well as in
mundane astrology.
3.
Maasa-Pravesh:
It will be seen that every
month, after Sun enters the new sign, at some moment it will pass over the same
degree, minute & second of longitude as at the time of birth. This will
repeat every month at an interval of approximately one month. The time, when Sun’ longitude in any sign
is the same degree, minute & second as was at the time of birth, is called
the Maasa-Pravesh or monthly solar return. Thus there will be 12 Maasa-Pravesh in a year and the first Maasa-Pravesh will be identical with the
Varsh-Pravesh for the year. A
horoscope cast for the moment of the Maasa-Pravesh
is called the monthly chart for that month.

Calculating the Maasa-Pravesh
1.
Note the exact longitude of the Sun at the time of Varsh-Pravesh for any year of life. If we add one sign to it, we
get the longitude of the Sun for the next Maash-Pravesh.
From the ephemeris, we calculate the exact date & time, when the attains
this longitude. This date & time is the Maasa-Pravesh
for the second month. If we add two signs to the Sun’s natal longitude, it
gives us the Sun’s longitude for the third month, and the date & time when
the Sun attains this longitude, constitutes the Maasa-Pravesh for the third month; and so on.
2.
There is an alternative method for calculating Maasa-Pravesh for any month. Note the longitude of the Sun at the
time of birth. For the next 11 months, find out the date & time each month,
when the Sun attains the same degree, minute, & second of longitude as at
birth. Thus we get the maasa-Pravesh
for first 12 months of a native’s life. This may be tabulated for future use.
In order to calculate the Maas-Pravesh
for any given month in any given year of life, add the Dhruvanka for the completed number of years to the Maas-Pravesh for the corresponding month
of the first year of life. This will give the Maas-Pravesh for the required month & the year of the native.
As it is it is hardly ever that all the 12 Maasa-Pravesh
& monthly charts are prepared. Normally only one or two monthly charts are
prepared. It may be noted that the Maasa-Pravesh
calculated by the two methods may differ slightly. It is for the readers to
decide which one gives better results.
