Nakshtras

12. The zodiac is divided into 27 Nakshtras or constellations, each having an extent of 13 degrees & 20 minutes. Each Nakshtra may be further divided into four equal parts of 3 degrees & 20 minutes each, and called the Padas, Charans or quarters. Since there are 12 signs in the zodiac, each sign consists of two and a quarter Nakshtras or 9 Nakshtra Padas. The order of rulers of the first nine Nakshtras is Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury. This order repeats in the next group of nine Nakshtras, and again in the last group of nine Nakshtras. The fiery signs- Aries, Leo & Sagittarius, have same set of Nakshtras i.e. Ketu (4 Padas), Venus A(4 Padas) and of Sun (1 Pada). The earthy signs- Taurus, Virgo & Capricorn, have next set of Nakshtras i.e. Sun (3 Padas), Moon (4 Padas) and of Mars (2 Padas). Similarly airy signs- Gemini, Libra & Aquarius, have next set of Nakshtras i.e. Mars (2 Padas), Rahu (4 Padas), and of Jupiter (3 Padas); and Watery signs- Cancer, Scorpio & Pisces, have next set of Nakshtras i.e. Jupiter (1 Pada), Saturn (4 Padas), and of Mercury (4 Padas).

Following types:

1. Laghu, Dynamic or Swift: These (Ashwani, Pushya, Hasta & Abhijit) are suitable for travelling, fine art, trading, opening of shop, construction, education and medical treatment.

2. Violent or fierce: These (Bharini, Magha, Purva-phalguni & Purva –ashada) are of aggressive nature and are good for surgical operations and aggressive purposes like waging a war etc.

3. Mixed: These (Krittika & Vishakha) are of mixed type and are good for fiery types of work or of preparations of medicines.

4. Sthira or fixed: These (Rohini, Uttar-Phalguni, Uttar- ashada, & Uttar- -Bhadra) are good for laying foundations and works of fixed nature like building houses, marriages and launching new ventures.

5. Gentle or tender: These (Mrigshira, Chitra, Anuradha, & Revati) are chosen for auspicious ceremonies, learning music, travel, wearing jewellery.

6. Movable: These (Punurvasu, Swati, Shravan, Dhanistha & Satbhisha) are good for anything connected with motion, machinery, journey etc.

7. Pungent: These (Ardra, Ashlesha, Jyestha & Moola) are good for illegal deeds, cheating, tantra, black magic etc.

14. Nakshtras have a great importance in predictive astrology. The whole system of Parashari/ Yogini dashas are based on position of Moon at the time of birth in a particular Nakshtra. The Vedic astrology gives great importance to the Nakshtra in which Moon is placed at birth and call it as “birth star”. The transition from Ashlesha to Magha or Jyestha to Moola or Revati to Ashwani is called “Gand-Mool Nakshtra, which is considered very evil if a native is born during this transition or an event, lagna, or planet is placed in Gand-Moola Nakshtra. The classical texts are, however, silent on the exact role of Nakshtras in delineating a chart be it a natal, annual or horary chart. One of the major influences on any planet or lagna is of its Nakshtra lord, its placement, association or aspects. Similarly a house is influenced by its cuspal lord, which is the Nakshtra lord of its Cusp or mid-point. The real, subtle and invisible strength emerges only when Nakshtras are integrated in analysis of charts. The analysis normally takes following steps:

1. Lagna, Lagnesh or Karyesh is in Nakshtra, whose lord is say planet A is in Nakshtra whose lord is say planet B.

2. Planet B is in Nakshtra whose lord is say planet C.

If planets A, B & C are strong and favourable, the results will be very good and favourable.
