9.2 Retrogression of Saturn

9.2.1 As per Vedic astrology, Saturn is the farthest from Earth and move at slowest of pace. However when retrograde, it is closest to the Earth but remains at its slow speed. It remains in a house for roughly 2-1/2 years, during which it remains retrograde for about 140 days and remains stationary for five days before and after retrogression. Thus it remains retrograde for about 36.39% of its time. Therefore his impact on a native is the strongest. The retrogression influences the native in two ways- its influence in the natal chart and by transit. The results of retrograde Saturn by transit depend to a large extent on the state, condition and lordship of Saturn in the natal chart and its relationship with dosha lords. It also affects the houses & planets associated with or aspected by transiting Saturn.  Under the influence of retrograde Saturn, a straight thinking native may suddenly change his ways, acts & thinking. The benefic Saturn who usually has positive influence may become ambiguous or disobedient by being retrograde; whereas the malefic, due to retrogression, can definitely become more negative and do not follow traditional/ ethical/ conventional ways. However in modern times, at times we honour those who go outside the box and are non-traditional/ unconventional. We may celebrate their potential to be original & different (as per Karakas) and at the same time try to control the negative aspects.

9.2.2 Retrograde Saturn usually does not know when to stop working or one may not like work at all. One must not give into a negative attitude and embrace depression as a habit. It normally depicts a native, poor and hungry for good things in life, for food and for material goods. The retrogression can make natives hungry with desires, wanting more & more, even when the hunger has been apparently appeased and they may be materially very well off. Saturn rules Vayu element, which needs to be used constructively; otherwise retrogression can make it unnecessarily destructive due to temporary blockage of Anahata Chakra. It retrograde Saturn happens to be lord of dasha or Antar-dasha as well, it indicates concentration of energy in that part of the zodiac and life appears to be stuck in limbo, neither moving forward or backward. Also triple transit effect can cause the Saturn transit over the same point thrice, which concentrates the energy of its difficult influence. If a natal planet is on the same degree as stationary Saturn, then it could be worse and a major issue to contend with. The house rulership and placement of the Moon will show, where the problem is about. If Saturn as lagna lord retrograde, it will have a major impact on native’s inner-self and his relationship with others. It is not a good time to marry.

9.2.3 The Saturn being the karaka of “Kaal” or time, its retrogression is the best method to judge the influence of Saturn as a matter of time. It allows time to view the circumstances impersonally and what to do about it unaffected by emotions. Saturn is a slow moving planet, when it becomes retrograde, one may not be enthusiastic in working, planning, expansion of business, signing new agreements or starting a new venture. These are times to slow down, be cautious, and review the works so far been done. When Saturn enters a house in direct motion, becomes retrograde moves into the previous house and then when he resumes direct motion again covers the same area a third time (Phenomenon of Triple transit). Here the Saturn backs off the territory it has already covered twice, to let the native feel little relieved of the mounting pressure to take stock of things and to take the appropriate actions as soon as the Saturn transits for the third time on the same point/ planet. When retrograde Saturn transits a planet that is retrograde at birth, the part of the personality does not work openly in the first phase. It works through indirect psychic process turned inward and not manageable, triggered by the unconscious ego. Many a times bearable pressures go within the native which cannot be seen or understood by others.
