9.1 Introduction

9.1.1
The Saturn or Shani, called an icy
cold planet, is, as per Vedas, a son of Sun and to Western astrologers a son of
Uranus. It is also called father of Gullika
& Mandi (Non-luminous Upgrahas)
and of “Yama”, the chief governor of
longevity. Saturn is the great friend of mankind and carries out the duties of
Lord Shiva. He is a strict disciplinarian, hard task master, asking for
self-control, restrain, sacrifice, patience, solitude & austerity. He loves
perfection, renunciation of desires & cravings and is a great fighter
against evil & baser instincts of life. He is the most dreaded planet
signifying sorrows, miseries, sufferings, obstacles, impediments, chronic
diseases, old age, servility, deformity, delays, laziness, depression, poverty,
justice, restrictions and longevity/ death among others. As per Vedic
astrology, in our solar system, it is the second largest and farthest from Sun.
It has numerous rings around it, three of them being more prominent. It has 12
Moons, the largest & most important being Titan. It gives great
concentration, meditation, introversion, hard work and perseverance required for
acquiring great knowledge for discoveries/ research. It knows no pity/
tenderness and asks none for itself. It is a separative planet and delights in
perversion, unhealthy & filthy conditions and harbours complexes,
prejudices, jealousy, hostility and bitter possessiveness. It is a first rate
malefic and is a Tamsik & airy
planet.
9.1.2
Saturn’s purpose by transit is to pressurize the native to fix what is broken,
to attend what is being long neglected, to restore order to whatever has become
chaotic/ out-of-control, and to reclaim what is intrinsically valuable. It acts
a “terminator” to let go of anything or anybody that thwarts ongoing growth,
and unclutter & simplify life by getting rid of non-essentials. To reduce
further pain & frustration, it allows such matters to come to well defined
close. This transit represents a timely opportunity to take stock of one by
carefully weighing the pros & cons of any/ every course of action, so far
taken. It rewards the native in small but steady ways for his solid,
well-grounded efforts to widely structure his goal and get back on track. It
may often bring in fear/ shame or a sense of regret for a long time wasted. One
should learn to appreciate the slowdown phase and curb any inclination to
fritter away the energies on the superficial or non-productive items. The
transit often calls for a review of one’s work-attitudes or material ambitions
and to ensure that one is on a right & realistic track. It seeks to grow
strong roots deeply and to build fortified structures that insulate our
strengths rather than trap weaknesses from within. During these periods, one
generally reserve & conserve energies in whatever area of life Saturn is
affecting. Saturn induces circumstances that engender self-discipline,
self-improvement and increase one’s level of accountability, responsibility
& maturity. It rewards hard work, achievement & commitment in
successful application & focusing of Saturnine energy- if one is working
seriously appropriate to one’s dharma/ duties. Saturn’s transit results
commences 100 kalas prior to the
degree wise transit position and lasts 100 Kalas
beyond it (100 kalas + 100 Kalas = 3
degree 20 minutes).
