A Guide to Palmistry: The Characteristics of Lines and Marks, Chapter IV, Part – 5

The Bar

The Bar is always an independent horizontal line. It is a bad sign showing the obstacles which will impede the good qualities of any ruling mount or main line. The nature of the obstacle together with its result might be known from the lines of influence connecting the bar to any mount or main line. The bar is seen on the Mount of Saturn more than in any other place.

Having dealt with the signs and moles on the palm let us describe some other formations on the palm with their bearing on human life. Apart from the signs there are certain markings on the palm the first and the foremost being the girdle of the Moon. This is a semi-circular figure touching the mount of Venus and the mount of Moon.

If a person has developed this formation, he is inclined to take to some vice due to great mental strain or misery. His health will deteriorate and the person might lose his brain powers. People given to self abuse; drunkards and heavy smokers invariably do possess this line. Again people who have developed this line are seen to pine for a child. If they have children they are very weak in constitution and the persons have to worry about their well being. In the case of women it indicates irregular monthly discharge, or misplacement of the uterus. Such women are liable to be sterile, and fat in stature. In the case of a man it may indicate early discharge and an excessive desire for a sex life. If the girdle is an `open’ girdle the above indications are experienced in a lesser degree. On the whole this is a most un-favourable indication on the palm.

In order to determine the quality of the ruling mounts and know whether they are good or bad, the reader should first of all examine those mounts for any clear good or bad sign or mark, bearing always in mind that the sign or mark is an independent and separate item and is not formed as a result of intersected broken lines (AB Fig 9).

Age on the Lines

When reading hands one should always made a practice of asking the age of the subject, so as to enable him the more readily to distinguish the past from the present or future. The age given may not always be the correct one, but apart from a capability to read age from the physical indications, there is no other means of ascertaining the age of the subject. The hand itself does not afford the necessary information; nor is it possible (as frequently claimed) to come down to the month in which any event noted has happened or may happen; the utmost that can be done is to fix the year, and to do that successfully requires a good deal of practice in reading age dates from the lines.

There are some Palmists who, in dealing with matrimonial questions, profess to be able to discern initials of names in the hands, others who can tell the subject’s lucky day; doubtless the same Palmists, if pressed, would venture to state what one would have for dinner on the morrow. Anyhow they could do the one thing as easily as they could the other-but from the hand, it is utterly impossible.

The method of reading the age of any past, present or future event one should go on the presumption that average length of the life is seventy years, and make his calculations as to date from the lines. After many years of experience and daily practice, one see no occasion for alteration-the diagrams herewith are sufficiently explicit and speak for themselves; the principle is applicable to all hands, long or short the Lines do not always run on the hands in the exact positions shown in the diagrams; allowance must be made for variations, as no two hands are spaced alike, while a further difficulty for the beginner lies in the fact that one or more such lines may be absent.

To read the age correctly will require a lot of practice. As a rule beginners read age readily, but the experienced reader of hands is far charier, and uses judgment in his fixings. The one and only essential to accuracy is practice, practice, and it requires a large amount of expertness to fix even the year when events shown will happen, or have happened.
