A Guide to Palmistry: The Mounts, Chapter VI, Part – 1

Dr. Shanker Adawal

The Mounts

The Mounts are seven in number (Fig. 1), and of these four are located at the base of the fingers, two are on the side of the hand, on what is termed the percussion, and one at the base of the thumb, which properly constitutes the third phalanx of the thumb. These Mounts are especially valuable in determining the type to which a native belongs, without which the clearest and most accurate delineation cannot be given.

Each of the fingers is named after the Mount to which it is attached, and partakes of the qualities of its particular Mount. As each Mount represents one of the original types into which the human race was divided, it is only from a due consideration of the development of some one or more of the Mounts that the type of the native can be obtained.

They vary in appearance in the hands, for in some cases they form little hills under the fingers, while in other hands they are so flat as to be almost indistinguishable on the palm-indeed, in some hands, where the Mounts should which are very prominent in the hand are what are termed strong Mounts; those which are flat are ordinary, while in the hands where there are depressions the Mount qualities are wanting.

The first aim in examining the Mounts will be to find which the strongest one is. Whichever it may be, it will show that the qualities of that Mount type are the leading ones. When one Mount is seen large and the others only normal, and on this Mount is a single deep vertical line, while the finger of the Mount is very long and well developed, it will indicate one who is practically a pure specimen of the type represented by the Mount. In order, however, to judge the extent to which the qualities of this strong Amount will operate, the Mount must not be flabby and its colour should be warm.

It is not often that a hand is seen with only one Mount developed; sometimes the hand will have two Mounts equally developed, and in such cases there will be a combination of the two types represented by the Mount. To ascertain which is the stronger of these Mounts, if one of them has a deep vertical line on it, or should be harder or redder than the other, this will show it to be the leading Mount.

Failing these indications, then the length and character of the fingers must be noted to ascertain their capability of increasing the strength or otherwise of the Mounts. The normal length of the finger of Jupiter should be to the middle of the first phalanx of the finger of Saturn-this latter should always be longer than the others in order to give balance to the character. The finger of Sun should also reach to the middle of the first phalanx of Saturn, and the finger of Mercury should reach the first Knot of Sun. If it is longer than this, the Mercurial qualities will be very pronounced; if shorter than the Knot, the Mercurial qualities will be deficient.

When all the Mounts seem to be equally balanced, the character will be a well balanced one, combining the qualities of all the type, and the life should be generally, tranquil and happy, provided the Mounts are without defects.

All the Mounts have their bad side as well as the good, and in deciding which side is the stronger, recourse must be had to the markings on the Mounts. As a genera rule, it is found that Vertical lines are good, whilst Horizontal lines which cut them are bad-this crossing of the Vertical and Horizontal lines is termed a Grille, and constitutes a defect of the Mount on which it is seen.

Some of the Mount types are more inclined to be evil than others, hence it will be  necessary to note the markings on the Mounts, the colour and Nails, as they will tell whether the defects are of the health or character. It will be necessary to examine both hands, comparing them to ascertain whether the course of the life has been progressive or retrograde.

In all cases, the character of the fingers-whether they are long or short, smooth or knotty-and the class of tips must be studied in connection with the Mount qualities and the health troubles incidental there to, as well as the nails.
