The fingers must next come
under examination, in order to ascertain whether they are normal in length,
long or short, and whether the joints are knotty or smooth-as also the
character of the Tips, and whether spatulate, square, conic, or pointed.
The practice of speaking
of hands as being spatulate square, conic, or pointed is entirely erroneous,
for the fingers cannot be classed in a group. Each one must be considered by
itself, as hands are almost mixed in type, and one will find that the finger
tips will be seen to vary greatly in shape.
Each finger is named from
and takes the quality of the Mount under it. Thus the first, or index finger is
named Jupiter, the second finger is Saturn, the third is named Sun, while the
fourth, or little finger, is named Mercury. The thumb is not considered as a
finger; it is so important that it stands in a class by itself.
In examining the fingers,
the first point to notice is their length. If any doubt is felt as to their length,
let the native close the fingers over the palm so as to ascertain how far
towards the wrist they reach. Generally speaking, they should, if long, reach
to the wrist, but allowance must be made for the Mounts at the base of the
fingers lessening their reach.
As a general rule, in
practice, whenever the fingers extend anywhere below the centre of the Mount of
Venus towards the wrist one can class them as long and apply long-fingered
qualities to them.
When the question of their
length has been satisfactorily established, the
next point will be to observe the joints at the back of the fingers, in
order to see if they are Knotty or Smooth, and also whether the first or second
joints, or both of them, are prominent or knotty, and apply knotty or smooth qualities
accordingly. Then note, by pressing backwards, the flexibility of each
individual finger; if one is more flexible than the others, the qualities of
the Mount for which it stands will be strong. Fingers bent (Fig. 1) laterally
always increase the shrewdness of the Mount qualities; whilst a finger which
twists on its axis discloses a liability to the moral or physical defects of
its Mount to determine which, an inspection of the particular Mount, the lines
marked on it, the nails, the Life Line, and the Line running to the Mount, is
essential.
There
are four fingers (Fig. 2): The Index or forefinger, usually
called that Finger of Jupiter, the Middle Finger or Medium or the Finger of
Saturn, the Angular or Ring Finger, or the Finger of Sun, and the Minimums or
Little Finger or the Finger of Mercury.
Naturally these fingers
vary in the length in proportion to each other, but being considered as one
unit they may be long or short.
Long fingers
It Express patience,
tolerance and tidiness. They are slow in motion and thought; hence they are the
long-lived type. They doubt everything and are not ready to leave anything for
chance. In order to avoid mistakes and unnecessary trouble, long ringers
carefully consider their work and do not array out same before due study and
accurate calculation. They are net sociable and like to live in solitude to
ponder and meditate over hard problems. In cases where the texture of the hand
skin is hard, long fingers will be selfish and extremely superstitious.
Long fingers have not the
slightest notion about time as long as they are sure of results. They are close
inquirers and observers and very keen about neatness and thoroughness. They
always look respectable and consider the feelings and circumstances of others.
Elastic long fingers
indicate a refined and delicate taste. They are fond of beauty regardless of
value, and have a particular vividness of conception and strength of emotion.
Hard long fingers adhere
to habits and fixed methods of action. They hate new ideas and are incapable of
new thoughts.
Fine long fingers he tray
delicate and wonderful minuteness and exactness. Sculptors, composers and
goldsmith or persons in the business of precious stones and metals have fine
long fingers.
Long fingers have
sufficient power to control their emotions; they fear falling in love for fear
of scandal and expenses.
If the long fingers are
hard, thin and narrow they disclose hypocrisy. In such cases knots are
developed on the second phalanges.
The Thumb or Pollex is not
a finger. It is an independent part of the hand of enterable importance (see
chapter V).
When knots appear on the
first phalanges of the long fingers, they betray an inquisitive vexing nature
and love for petty things which are niggardly kept even unattended were
dispensable. Knots developed on the second phalanges of hard long fingers are
the sign of quarrelsome temperament which always argues and protests for sake
of contradiction and cheating trouble.
