7.1 Introduction

7.1.1 Mars, Mangal or Kuja as it is known as, is the first planet on the far side of Earth from the Sun and hence is called an outer/ superior planet. It is a Tamas Planet with natural malevolence of a high order. Like other outer planets, it has, in addition to normal 7^th house aspect, two additional aspects on 4^th and 8^th house (both of which are malefic). It has an eccentric orbit around Sun of 687 days and stays in a sign on an average for little less than two months; but due to its eccentricity, retrogression and different speeds, its stay in a sign/ house may vary from one to six/ seven months. Some of his basic traits are quite similar to inner planets. For example, the chemical composition and the environment on Mars are similar to Mercury & Venus. The transit effects of Mars like inner planets normally last for 2-3 days, but when retrograde, it may extend to 10-12 days. Therefore some astrologers consider it as an inner planer as far as transit results are concerned.

7.1.2 Mars acts on the extremes-either soft like wax or hard like stone. It is a first rate malefic but gives benefic results also when well-placed (for Aries, Cancer or Leo Lagna natives) as exalted, or as Yogkaraka or forming Ruchika yoga. He is strong (Digbali) in 10^th house during day and rules over South direction. He is a male planet full of courage & valour. In 1^st, 2^nd, 4^th, 7^th, 8^th or 12^th house, he causes Manglik Dosh, inimical to matters related to spouse or matrimonial purposes. The first cycle of Mars runs between 28 to 33 years and the 2^nd between 63^rd to 68^th year. It mainly signifies brothers, land & property, husband, sex, vitality/ energy, logic, passion, impulse, combativeness, blood and animal instincts. A benefic Mars offers self-confidence, good health, adventurous spirit, sharp wit, strong determination and leadership qualities. While a weak or afflicted Mars makes the native unhappy with domestic life, lose temper quickly, fool hardy, quarrelsome, dangers from surgeries, accidents, bone-fractures, fire or weapons, is a sexual pervert or a brute and ladies may have abortion/ miscarriage/ problems in mensuration cycles. He has special affinity with impulsive & rash actions and blood-shed.

7.1.3 The transit of Mars is beneficial in 3^rd, 6^th & 11^th house from natal Moon, if 12^th, 5^th & 9^th places respectively are free from transit by any other planet. Conversely if Mars is placed in 12^th, 5^th or 9^th place and some other planet is transiting in 3^rd, 6^th, or 11^th place from natal Moon, the adverse results of Mars are largely nullified. Mars starts giving results of a house/ sign one week before he enters the new house/ sign. Its transit results are comparatively better during period of waxing Moon. Mars is a focused force, outgoing impulse, physical heat and action. Mars acts to energize and activate the conditions surrounding the planets, houses and the points it touches or aspects. The energy is used to maintain one’s position. His transit gives energy & vigour. Persons with strong Mars dominate others. The effect of his transit are quick and soon over; they tend to precipitate matters and rarely give any choice of action. The rapid expansion produces unpremeditated actions and seems to act as an exploding, violent or mild as per temperament generated by native’s past thoughts. Whether its transit may or may not cause quarrels/ disputes, depends on the sign of transit and the native should work hard to cope with the situation. It, being a fiery planet, causes rashness, hot temper, accidents, cuts, wounds, high blood pressure/ fever or surgical operations.

7.1.4 Retrograde Mars: Mars retrograde approximately for 8 to 12 weeks every alternate year. It is then that it makes its effect felt since it is closest to the Earth. As per Karmic insight Report, it indicates that in a previous life-time/ (s), the native had misused the aggression aggressively & directly or had insistently discouraged its use due to self- initiative/ will. Hence now the native feels that forceful action is wrong/ dangerous and his physical energy & vitality never rise to meet the challenge. It implies stubborn & unyielding physical force, which does not move until some physical reason is found for its expression. Such natives often stop in the middle of a project or responsibility. Such persons often rebel against their own desires and try to stifle them. In case of females, Mars, a karaka for husband, when retrograde, delays the marriage of the native.
