5.3 Vedha

5.3.1 Vedha means obstruction. When a planet, transiting through an auspicious sign, is subjected to Vedha by another planet, the benefic effects of the planet will be checked. The Vedha points are of utmost importance in transit and are always counted from natal Moon sign. In order that an obstruction is not caused to the conveying of the benefic results, this Vedha house must be free from the occupation by another transiting planet. In the following table, the numerator shows benefic places of transit of planets from Moon sign; whereas denominator indicates Vedha (obstruction) point for each planet from Moon sign. There is No Vedha between Sun & Saturn and Moon & Mercury.

According to Sage Mantreshwar, Rahu & Ketu give theiur benefic results and have their Vedha points same as that of Sun. However Some astrologers are of the opinion that it should be as per benefic / Vedha points of Mars/ Saturn.

5.3.2 An Assessment: We have a total of 108 transit points (nine planets x 12 houses). Out of these 108 transit points in a horoscope, there are only 44 places where the planets are due to provide beneficial results. This shortage of benefic results are further curtailed by the Vedha houses, as Vedha houses curtail only the benefic places. Thus it is worth noting and remembering that the transit is located heavily in favour of providing greater volume of malefic results.

5.3.3 Vam Vedha: The Narad Purana talks of Vam Vedha, which means nullification of Vedhas. It is achieved by the simultaneous transit of another planet with the planet that is transiting in the assigned benefic place and is facing Vedha. For example, if transiting Sun is in 3rd house from natal Moon (a benefic place), it will face a Vedha due to simultaneous transit of a planet (other than Saturn) in 9th house. But this Vedha will be nullified if one or more planets join the Sun in 3rd house. However, this does not find any mention in recent classics. Hence it needs further research.
