Basilio: Its dominance is over residential areas.
Discussion of the features stated above
Colour: Mercury has been described wheatish in colour similar to the Durva grass but this is incorrect because when viewed with the naked eye it appears to be blue-yellow in colour. Gunakar says it is bluish in colour while Western astrologers have described its colour as being closer to slate, pink or even grey.
Skin: It appears incorrect to attribute the ruler ship of skin or complexion to Mercury since often there are cases when people contract skin ailments but do not have a malefic Mercury in their horoscopes. On the contrary, when Mercury is malefic ailments like mental illness, epileptic fits and madness are more common. If Mars the ruler of skin is in Aries, Leo, Sagittarius, Capricorn or Aquarius, the texture is dry and coarse. If Mars is in Taurus or Scorpio the skin is thick but delicate. In Gemini or Libra, Mars leaves the skin is thin yet strong. In Cancer, Virgo and Pisces, it is thin and delicate. If Mercury is placed in an auspicious position but Mars is blemished, the person contracts skin diseases. There are problems like boils, warts, moles, pimples, itchy rashes, measles and even leprosy. Hence, it is Mars that rules skin and not Mercury.
Place: Playground. This is premised on the assumption that Mercury is in the stage of infancy but science has progressed a lot since those days. And hence, it can be deduced that any place of wisdom is also under the influence of Mercury.
Clothing: This is described as rotten and wet but the reasoning for this is not clear. Though Kalidasa did say that it is new clothing, which characterizes Mercury, this is not borne out by observations.
Mineral: There does not appear to any concrete reasoning among the ancient astrologers for stating these as conch shells. In my view, it is graphite, which is ruled by Mercury as that is used to prepare writing materials.
Season: Monsoons. Some have said Winter is the season ruled by Mercury but that is incorrect. It is monsoons, which mark the return of spring, and also turn fields all over the country side a vibrant green. Incidentally, green is virtually accepted as the colour of Mercury.
Taste: Piquant. Those ruled by Mercury like sour foods such as curds, buttermilk, tamarind and pickles. Western astrologers, however, describe the taste preferences of Mercury ruled persons as neutral.
Stage: Infancy. Mercury is the smallest of all planets in physical appearance. It is believed to be of royal descent and that appears to be the case.
Rising: It usually rises from the direction of the head. The specifics of planetary rising are discussed extensively in Ravi Vichar.
Life forms: It is widely believed that mercury assumes the form of birds. Western astrologers call it the winged messenger. In this day, this would translate as showing Mercury’s influence in radio, wires and telegraph works. It may be recalled that in the earlier ages birds were used as messengers in the absence of wires.
Dwelling: It is correct that Mercury resides in the homes and villages of the learned.
Shakhadhip: This description is obscure and the meaning is not traceable.
Deity: Vishnu. In my opinion, Mercury is the ruler of thought and knowledge and therefore I believe that it is Sarasvati the Goddess of Learning who should be viewed as the attendant deity for Mercury.
Gem: Though most say it is emerald or Lapis Lazuli, I believe it is opals that represent mercury. I have seen the effects personally. There was a boy who was intelligent yet refused to attend school. He wasted most of his time. But once an opal was hung around his neck, his nature became calm and he ended up devoting the required time to his studies. Not only that he was an excellent student and went on to be a noted scholar.
