My Thoughts: Though some astrologers have said that the person will be learned and intelligent, I have not seen this trait in any sign so far. What Yavanmath says about unhappiness pertaining to sons, whether it be their death or bad behaviour, this seems to be true only if the Sun is present in the Fifth House. However, if the Sun is in the Third House the exact takes place. What Yavanmath says about losing wealth at age 22 and Hillajaatak’s observations about the birth of a son at the same age are correct. One astrologer’s observation that Mercury is extremely weak in the Fourth House appears incorrect to me unless it is in combination with Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn. The unknown astrologer’s observations are all incorrect. There are next to no chances of a 16-year-old acquiring wealth from a stranger. In short, the beneficial traits astrologers speak of are all seen in masculine signs while the malefic effects are in the feminine signs.
My Experience: If Mercury is in a masculine sign, then there is some scope for studies but with any interruptions. If it is in Aries, Leo or Sagittarius, the person is quick to anger, a loner but one who likes people. He does not enjoy a harmonious relationship with his mother and he has a lot of false pride. He does not help others and is very stingy. In Gemini, Libra or Aquarius, the presence of Mercury means the person does not enjoy a good relationship with the father. He is full of pride about his knowledge and learning and has a tendency to assume that everyone around him is a fool. His education remains incomplete. If Mercury is in a feminine sign, there is some wealth acquired from trade but he ha frequent quarrels with other traders around him. This person does get some wealth and property.
Mercury in the Fifth House
Acharya and Gunakar: He is a minister or an adviser.
Kalyanavarma: Mantrabhichaarakushalo bahutanayaha panchame soumye. Vidhyaasukhapabhaavaihi samanvito harshasanyuktaha. He excels in scriptures and occult practices. He has many sons. He is learned, happy and influential. He is contented and peaceful. Chandrasute sanjaate ravigehe daarikaa bahulaha syaath. If Mercury is in Leo the person has many daughters.
Garg: Panchamasthashchandraputraha santaanam prakaroti hi. Astangataha shatrudrishtashchotpannasya vinaashakaha. Maatulaa nashyanti. Saumye chaalpusutatvam. Mercury in the Fifth House signifies that the person has children at an early age. But if the planet is malefic or retroverted or influenced by any other malefic planet the children die early. The person has few sons and his maternal uncle is destroyed.
Baidhyanath: Mantraabhichaarakushalaha sutadaaravittasutadaaravitaa vidhyaayashobalayutaha sutage sati gye. He excels in the occult. He has many sons, many women, much wealth, learning, glory and power.
Brihadyavanajaatak: The properties of Mercury in the Fifth House are similar to those in the Fourth House. Sharaadhe maatuhu kshayam. The mother dies when the person is five years old.
Kashinath: Panchame rohiniputre putrapoutrasamanvitaha subudhi satvasampannaha sukhi bhavati maanavaha. He has many children, is powerful and of sharp intellect and generally remains happy.
Vasishtha: Buddhashcha swalpaatmajam roojam. The person has few children and many diseases.
Jayadeva: Mitraputrasukhayuk shubhasheelou mantrashaastravidasou sutage gye. He has many friends and sons. He is brave and he is skilled and knowledgeable about the scriptures.
Narayanabhatt: Vayasyadime putragarbho na tishstth bhaveth tasya medhaarthasampaadayitri. Budhairbhanyate panchame rohineye kiyad vidhyet kaitalasyaabhichaaram. In later life, he does not have sons, only daughters. He acquires wealth by using his wits. He is skilled with the occult arts.
Jeevanath and Jaageshwar: The same as described by Narayanabhatt.
