Squaw Vine (Mitchella
repens)
Its common names are
checkerberry, hive vine, deerberry, oneberry partridgeberry, twinberry, winter
clover and squawberry.
Squaw vine contains resin,
wax, mucilage, dextrin and possibly saponin. It helps in tonify blood.
Squaw vine is a diuretic,
tonic and astringent. It makes childbirth faster and easier when used in the
last few weeks of pregnancy. As a diuretic it is used for gravel and urinary
ailments. Squaw vine tea makes a good wash for skin problems and sore eyes. It
will also help relieve insomnia.
Strawberry
Leaves (Fragaria vesca)
Common names re pineapple
strawberry, mountain strawberry, wood strawberry, common strawberry and wild
strawberry.
This plant was originally
called strawberry because the berries appear to be scattered among the leaves
of the plant. In literature, it symbolizes sensuality and desire, whereas in
religion it symbolizes perfection and righteousness.
Strawberry leaves contain
cissotanic, malic and citric acids, as well as sugar and mucilage. The leaves
have been used as a blood treatment, but there are many other uses. It has many
minerals and is useful for the treatment of scurvy and other mineral deficient
blood disorders.
Strawberry leaves are a
tonic, diuretic and astringent. The fruit is a diuretic and refrigerant. The
herb may be used internally or externally. Strawberry tea stimulates appetite,
is good for bowel troubles and cleans the stomach. As an external wash it helps
eczema. It is also good for diarrhea and weakness of the intestines.
Uva
Ursi (Arctostaphylos uva ursi)
Its common names are
universe vine, bearberry, upland cranberry, mountain cranberry, wild cranberry,
mountain box, bear’s grape, kinnikinnick, sagackhomi and mealberry.
It is bitter and cold, the
part used are leaves.
Uva ursi contains the
glucoside arbutin, ursone, gallic and ellagic acids, a yellow principle
somewhat like quercetin and possibly myricetin. The leaves also contain six to
seven per cent tannin.
It is used as a urinary
antiseptic for the bladder infections, and to treat blood in the urine, kidney
infection and womb problems.
Uva ursi is an astringent,
tonic and diuretic. It is very good for kidney problems, diabetes,
haemorrhoids, piles, excessive menstruation, spleen, liver troubles, pancreas
problems and mucous discharges containing pus and blood from the bladder. It is
helpful for gonorrhea and ulceration of the neck of the womb. It may be taken
internally and externally as a douche.
