Valerian (Valeriana
officinalis)
Common names are German
valerian, English valerian, great wild valerian, vermon valerian, all heal,
vandal root, set wall and American English valerian.
The plant is maximum up to
five feet tall, the roots are used to prepare one of the best sedatives to be
obtained from herbal sources. It is one of the best herb to use as home
remedies but in small quantity.
Valerian contains a
brown-yellow oil that contains valerianic, formic and acetic acids. The root
contains two alkaloids-chatarine and valerianine-plus a glucoside and resin.
Valerian is a stimulant,
tonic, anodyne, antispasmodic and nervine. It is a very good nerve tonic. When
taken hot it will help promote menstruation. For children it is excellent for
measles, scarlet fever and restlessness. It is also helpful for relieving
colic, breaking up colds, lowering fevers and relieving gravel in the bladder.
It is healing to an ulcerated stomach. Valerian tea can be used externally for
sores and pimples as well as taken internally.
Note:
Large doses of valerian, repeated too often, produce pain in the head,
heaviness and stupor. One should not drive or fly after drinking a cup of it
because it dulls the senses.
White
Oak Bark (Querous alba)
Its other common name is
tanner’s bark.
White oak bark is an
astringent, tonic and antiseptic. Its tea is excellent for various problems of
the womb. The herb will also expel pin worms. And it is used as an enema for
piles, haemorrhoids and problems in the rectum. It will stop haemorrhages in
the lungs, stomach and bowels, as well as bleeding at the mouth. It increases
urination and removes gallstones and kidney stones. It is use useful in
lowering fevers and helpful for an ulcerated bladder or bloody urine.
It may be taken internally
and rubbed externally for varicose veins.
Yellow
Dock (Rumex crispus)
Its common names are
garden patience, narrow dock, curled dock, sour dock and rumex.
It is bitter and cool, the
part used is root.
Rumicin is the active
ingredient. The root contains chrysarobin. Yellow dock is also one of the best
forms of natural iron available, containing approximately 40 per cent iron.
It is used to treat skin
diseases, liver disorders and iron deficiency, & anaemia.
Yellow dock is a
chloagogue, tonic and astringent. It is used as a laxative and blood purifier.
It is useful for eruptive diseases and skin problems. The ointment is good for
itching, swelling, sores and scabby eruptions. Hot tea is used for glandular
tumours and swelling. The herb also relieves congested liver conditions. It combines
well with sarsaparilla as a tea for chronic skin problems.
