Poisonous Herbs

The planets or categories of plants that are considered poisonous.

Angel’s Trumpet (Datura)

This plant is a hallucinogen, it may cause convulsions.

Bird of Paradise (Poincians gilliesif)

Severer poisoning may occur when this plant is ingested.

Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia)

The seeds of this plant may cause dullness and depression, vomiting and a weak pulse.

Castor Bean (Ricinus communis)

Large doses of the seeds of this plant are injurious, leading to convulsions, exhaustion and death.

Crownflower (Calotropis gigantean)

The sap from this plant may cause severe eye injury.

Dumbcane (Dieffenbachia)

This plant may cause a swollen tongue and loss of speech if ingested.

Elephant Ear (Alocasia macrorrhiza)

If this plant is chewed, there may be intense pain around the lips, mouth and tongue.

Foxglove (Digitalis)

This plant may cause nausea, vomiting and dizziness. It also affects the rhythms of the heart.

Golden Chain (Laburnum anagybides)

Ingestion of this plant may cause excitement, lack of coordination and death through asphyxiation.

Jequirity Bean (Abrus precatorius L)

The seeds from this plant, also known as rosary pea, are violently poisonous.

Jerusalem Cherry (Solarium pseudocapsicutna)

Alkaloids in this plant can cause vomiting when it is ingested. There may also be local irritation and a slowing action on the heart.

Lily of the Valley (Convallaria najalis)

The roots, leaves and fruit of this plant can stimulate the heart muscles in much the same way digitalis can.

Meadow Saffron (Colchicum autumnale)

This plant, also called autumn crocus, may cause burning of the throat, intense thirst and vomiting, followed by possible death from respiratory failure.

Philodendron (Philodendron)

If ingested, this plant can cause a skin rash requiring long-term medical care as well as swelling of the mouth and throat.

Red Peppers (Capsicum)

This plant is also called bird peppers and chillies. Although peppers make a very good seasoning and are a beneficial herb, they can be dangerous in overdoses.

Rhododendron (Rhododendron)

This plant may cause intense pain, diarrhea and discomfort.

Spurge Laurel (Daphne)

Ingestion of this plant may cause intense irritation of the mouth and convulsions.

Tobacco Tree (Nicotiana)

Severe stomach upset and pain may occur when this plant is ingested.

Tropical Woodrose (Argyrela nervosa)

This plant, also called baby Hawaiian wood rose, is a hallucinogen if ingested.

Wisteria (Wisteria)

Ingestion of the pods of this plant may cause severe gastrointestinal symptoms.

Yellow Oleander (Thevetia  peruviana)

All parts of this plant, are dangerous, acting as a heart poison.

Yew (Taxus)

This plant contains a violent gastrointestinal irritant. Ingestion causes a quick pulse, fainting, convulsions and death.

Several other plants are also poisonous. Until the properties of these herbs are well-known, the best rule of thumb is to under dose, not overdose.
